Summary
Lung cancer is common in Australia. Multiple diagnostic procedures may be used, thought they have never been directly compared. Our study will determine the optimal path of investigation of patients with suspected lung cancer, examining safety, diagnostic accuracy, cost, and the ability to provide essential information required in lung cancer care. Work will focus on use of CT-guided tests, or bronchoscopy (examination of the inside of the airways), the two most commonly used diagnostic methods.

Although molecular and computing advances have enabled more detailed investigations of inherited diseases and the ability to fit realistic statistical models to these data, limitations still exist when analysing family data. Often only basic statistical analyses are performed, due to the lack of understanding of complexities within the data and-or inability of researchers to fit appropriate statistical models. These factors have hampered the search for genes and environmental factors influencing ....Although molecular and computing advances have enabled more detailed investigations of inherited diseases and the ability to fit realistic statistical models to these data, limitations still exist when analysing family data. Often only basic statistical analyses are performed, due to the lack of understanding of complexities within the data and-or inability of researchers to fit appropriate statistical models. These factors have hampered the search for genes and environmental factors influencing common diseases. This project aims to develop novel, biologically realistic statistical models for investigation of common, complex diseases, such as heart disease and cancer, in families. These models will incorporate both measured and unmeasured genetic and environmental factors, and will be applicable to both normally distributed and non-normally distributed traits. Model fitting will use computer-intensive simulation techniques. Application of the models to data from two large pre-existing studies of international renown, the Victorian Family Heart Study and the Australian Prostate Cancer Family Study, will enable a better understanding of the genetic and environmental factors influencing heart disease and cancer. The models will also be applicable to many other studies of diseases which use data from families, and allow more accurate and useful information to be obtained from data. Software will also be made freely available to other researchers. Capsaicin, the active ingredient of hot chillies, and other pungent plant extracts have been used for millennia to relieve minor pain. We now know that these agents produce pain relief (analgesia) by numbing the very nerve cells (neurons) which transmit pain signals to the brain. The unique analgesic properties of vanilloids may have a place in modern medicine, giving relief to sufferers of certain types of chronic pain (e.g., neuropathic pain) which are not responsive to morphine-like analgesic ....Capsaicin, the active ingredient of hot chillies, and other pungent plant extracts have been used for millennia to relieve minor pain. Indeed, the promise of more potent and less pungent vanilloid analgesics has led to the discovery of numerous naturally-occurring and synthetic vanilloids. However, although the neurons which convey information regarding blood pressure and the oxygen content of arterial blood to control centres in the brain stem are also stimulated by vanilloids, the central (brain stem) actions of vanilloids on blood pressure and respiration have not been investigated in detail. Thus, the aim of this project is to describe the characteristics of vanilloid receptors in the brain stem, determine the acute and chronic effects of naturally-occurring and synthetic vanilloids on blood pressure and respiration, and elucidate the role played by other neurotransmitter chemicals in the actions of vanilloids. Summary
Type III hypersensitivity underlies a number of common autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosus. These diseases are caused by the deposition of immune complexes (IC) and the accumulation of neutrophils within small blood vessels. We will use real time imaging to dissect in space and time the recruitment of neutrophils and IC deposition during type III hypersensitivity reactions in order to better understand the pathogenesis of these conditions.
