If Australia is to have a place as a 21st century nation it must be supported by an effective public service. In Western Australia, teachers, nurses and police make up 70% of the public service. The effectiveness of these services is a direct function the 'health' of these occupations and the ?health? of the organisations employing teachers, nurses and police. Inequality, Trade, and Technology. This project aims to improve our understanding of the causes of rising income inequality in the world economy and in Australia since the early 1980s. We focus on the increasing building costs and imports of machinery as significant contributors to the increasing inequality. We hypothesize 1) that the increasing costs of buildings have reduced the demand for workers that are complementary to non-residential building capital; thus, reducing real wages; and 2) tha ....Inequality, Trade, and Technology. This project aims to improve our understanding of the causes of rising income inequality in the world economy and in Australia since the early 1980s. We focus on the increasing building costs and imports of machinery as significant contributors to the increasing inequality. Piketty’s influential book, Capital in the 21st Century, stimulated research on inequality to address the increased public concern about inequality and its side-effects such as reduced growth. Piketty proposes three laws that explain and predict inequality paths over time, but there is no empirical evidence or theoretical foundations for these laws. Investigating imprecision in preferences and its possible consequences for economics and economic choices. When people's preferences are not clear, their choices become variable and susceptible to theoretically irrelevant influences. Examples can be found in surveys of preferences intended to inform public policy in areas such as health, safety and the environment. Understanding the nature of imprecision in people's values and choices is also likely to be crucial for consumers' ability to advan ....Investigating imprecision in preferences and its possible consequences for economics and economic choices. This research extends a model of cross-cultural consumer behaviour suggested by the first CI (Lee, 2000) that provides richer specification of the antecedents of people's actions than previously suggested models. The model will be compared with these models, which have been successful in Western, but less successful in Eastern, cult ....Understanding cross-cultural consumer behaviour and implications for effective segmentation, targeting and positioning of Western Australia as a tourism destination. The model will be tested in the tourism domain to predict intentions and behaviour of potential visitors. Results will be used to improve the effectiveness of Western Australia's tourism marketing.
