Summary
We will produce a tool to identify social impairments in children and adolescents. The tool, called PEERSTM (Paediatric Evaluation of Emotions, Relationships & Socialisation), is at the forefront of digital health, combining cutting edge research with technology for increased accuracy, speed and efficiencies within the healthcare system. It is: i) based on social neuroscience theory; ii) supported by poof-of-concept data; and iii) of high relevance to health professionals and educators.

Summary
Children of preschool age and older demonstrate social problems after a traumatic brain injury (TBI). What effect a TBI has on the social function of young children (before 3 years) is currently unknown but is thought that these children have more problems than older children do. This study will look at how a TBI impacts on the social function of young children and the role of cognition and brain development in social function will also be explored.

With a world first, Australian researchers explore the lives of children whose parents have intellectual disabilities. Mothers with intellectual disabilities are at risk of social isolation and exclusion which affects their parenting. Their children are at risk of stigma and peer rejection. From a child’s perspective, new research examines the features of family, school and community life that facilitate social inclusion for a group of children at risk of social exclusion.

Summary
My laboratory is striving to understand how the patterns of neuronal connections form in the developing brain and how these underpin the functions of the brain throughout life. We use high-field magnetic resonance imaging to measure brain wiring and we investigate the genetic and environmental mechanisms causing developmental brain disorders that result in intellectual disability, autism, epilepsy and some mental illnesses.
