Small mercies, big futures: enhancing law, policy and practice in the selection, protection and settlement of refugee children and youth. This project will assist refugee youth and children who ultimately become Australian citizens or permanent residents. In so doing, it will help to maximise the social benefits that flow from immigration. The project will also help to reduce the risk of social dysfunction that flows from damage sustained in childhood. This project involves national, groundbreaking research into the newly-emerging phenomenon of genetic discrimination in Australia. Undertaken by a multi-disciplinary, cross-institutional team with a wide range of expertise, this innovative and topical research will investigate genetic discrimination across three key perspectives: consumers, third parties and the le ....Genetic discrimination in Australia: an exploration of the nature and extent of the phenomenon within the legal and social context. This project involves national, groundbreaking research into the newly-emerging phenomenon of genetic discrimination in Australia. Undertaken by a multi-disciplinary, cross-institutional team with a wide range of expertise, this innovative and topical research will investigate genetic discrimination across three key perspectives: consumers, third parties and the legal system. It will advance the existing knowledge base, both nationally and internationally, and establish comprehensive baseline data for further evaluative research. Important outcomes for each of the three sectors will be generated, as well as a comprehensive overview of this important new Australian social issue. Recommendations will inform the development of appropriate law and policy.

The capacity to exercise rights associated with citizenship, and to participate meaningfully in community life, is significantly affected by access to financial security and by community confidence in the independence and fairness of systems of entitlement review. Prospects for quality work and gender equality in frontline care work. Despite policy concerns about unmet demand for paid care, frontline care workers generally have poorer conditions than workers in other feminised sectors. This project will investigate the regulatory options to improve the quality of care work to build Australian expertise and knowledge about the links between job quality and quality of care services.
The Australian Judiciary: A National Socio-Legal Analysis. Courts and judges constitute a key social and legal institution, with a distinctive obligation to maintain the rule of law. The knowledge produced by this research will benefit the judiciary, the courts, government and the public they serve. Research findings will be used by courts and government to shape policy in recruitment, selection and professional development.
