Summary
This Fellowship aims to determine why some young people with disruptive behaviour disorders (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and conduct disorder) have worse outcomes than others with the same disorders. This body of work will investigate how differences in symptoms and environmental factors determine their outcomes in later life. These findings will also be used to develop an intervention targeted at young at-risk Australians.
There’s recent evidence that children get leaner and fitter during the school term, but become fatter and less fit over the summer holidays. This may be because of differences in activity and diet: on holidays, children may eat more, be less active and have more screen time. We propose to track the time use, diet, fitness and fatness of 9-11 year old children across three school years. If the pattern is confirmed, we should focus more on the home environment, or perhaps encourage summer camps.

Breathing gets impaired and impact on the productivity and quality of life when chronic respiratory diseases rise with ageing. Adult chronic respiratory diseases are major causes of illness and death but there are still many gaps in knowledge on how best to prevent and manage these diseases. The proposed program will provide evidence to guide health policy and clinical management of these diseases. These original findings will be of great importance both nationally and internationally.

Summary
Depression is one of the biggest public health problems, yet the causes remain largely unknown. This study aims to determine how environmental factors can combine with particular genes to increases an individual’s risk of depression. Environmental factors can also cause modifications to genes which can affect an individual’s health. This study will thus also examine whether women with post-natal depression and their children have different gene modifications than those without depression.
Allergies and chronic respiratory diseases are major causes of illness and death in Australia. Worryingly there are still many gaps in knowledge on how best to prevent and manage these diseases. The proposed program will investigate these questions and provide evidence to guide health policy and clinical management. As this program is built on state-of the-art methods and technology, these original Australian findings will be of great importance internationally.
