In our aging society, cancer represents a severe economic and quality-of-life threat. DNA methylation switches genes off, and recently, it was shown that defects in DNA methylation contribute to human diseases including cancer. This project will identify defects in DNA methylation associated with cancer. Identifying these defects will enable us to design non-invasive, early diagnostic tests for cancer on blood or bodily excretions, and to pursue novel therapeutic approaches for treating cancer. The expected outcomes would generate exports to markets in the USA and Europe and replace imports of drugs and technology to treat cancer.Read moreRead less
The biology of arbovirus virulence and fitness in arthropod and vertebrate hosts in vivo. In Australia, Ross River virus (RRV) represents significant concern to human health. Between 1992-2005 more than 50,000 notifications of RRV infection have been reported. While not fatal, the disease is responsible for morbidity in the community/individual that can have both social and economic costs. The project has several national benefits. While not fatal, the disease is responsible for morbidity in the community/individual that can have both social and economic costs. The project has several national benefits. It will help elucidate whether there is any association between RRV strain and increased risk of RRV transmission and/or occurrence of more severe cases of human disease. It will help develop technologies that can lead towards the identification of viral markers, which could provide new avenues in the design of novel antiviral strategies.

It is the first mouse model for SMG-1, a protein kinase that protects against a variety of different forms of stress. The strength of the model is that it can be combined with other mouse models to interrogate and elucidate the events occurring in different pathways for stress. The expectation is that ground-breaking data will be generated with this model providing scientific leadership on the role of this protein. It will also assist in establishing new collaborations.Read moreRead less

The Australian Tissue Engineering Network. Driven by four key nodes across the country, the Initiative aims to bring together geographically and financially separated groups into a critical mass of cell and tissue engineering research. This new and rapidly-growing field uses a bio-synthetic approach to replace, repair or regenerate damaged tissues and organs. The Initiative will build the framework which will enable the Network to: identify appropriate expertise, manage duplication, enhance co ....The Australian Tissue Engineering Network. Driven by four key nodes across the country, the Initiative aims to bring together geographically and financially separated groups into a critical mass of cell and tissue engineering research. This new and rapidly-growing field uses a bio-synthetic approach to replace, repair or regenerate damaged tissues and organs. The Initiative will build the framework which will enable the Network to: identify appropriate expertise, manage duplication, enhance communication, bring together innovative skill sets, create linkages, generate focussed research programs and foster novel commercial opportunities. Ultimately the Initiative and Network will deliver an improved quality of life, reduced healthcare costs, and increased productivity to Australia.Read moreRead less
A novel role for SMG-1 protein kinase in stress granule formation and the stress response. Humans are constantly exposed to agents in the environment that threaten the integrity of their cells and increases the risk of cancer and other pathologies. Cells have developed repair mechanisms to cope with damage to their DNA and avoid long term effects. The emphasis in this application is to investigate the mechanisms by which stress affects the transcriptional machinery in the cell. A description of the processes involved will assist in understanding how specific disease states arise and will provide a means of devising compounds/drugs to assist the response to stress. The mortality rates for many of the cancers afflicting the world's population are mirrored in Australia, particularly colon cancer. It's generally accepted that colon cancer, and cancers as a whole, are a significant healthcare issue in this country, representing a major challenge to biomedical researchers and healthcare professional. The economic and social impact is immense, placing a huge strain on the healthcare system, as well as on the families affected. Any alternative treatment reducing cancer metastasis would be of enormous national and international benefit. It's believed that the significant studies outlined in this proposal, which are based on exciting preliminary data, will make a sizeable contribution to achieving this goal.Read moreRead less
Identifying the pathways employed by growth hormone to regulate the proliferation of adult neural stem cells. As stem cells underpin the maintenance and regeneration of the brain and are known to decline in number and competence with age; understanding exactly how these cells are regulated is of broad national benefit. Furthermore, given the regulatory role of growth hormone throughout the body, insights gained from this project should lead to the discovery of novel therapeutic targets both within and outside the nervous system, ultimately leading to preventative and restorative strategies for maintaining good health. Finally, this Proposal is of significant national benefit as it will undoubtedly advance our knowledge base in stem cell biology, helping to maintain Australia as a global leader in stem cell research.Read moreRead less
Responding to the rural skills crisis: Modelling volunteer motivations and incentives to attract retired/semi-retired professionals to volunteer in rural areas. This project contributes directly to Promoting and Maintaining Good Health: Ageing well, ageing productively by placing a high value on the skills of older Australians and encouraging them to remain productive into retirement by sharing these skills. This project will also strengthen the social and economic fabric of rural communities by addressing the identified national priority area of skills shortages in rural areas by providing rural councils with a means to access skilled professionals to assist them in enhancing their economic and social sustainability. Further, use of sound, well-tested psychological theories of individual decision making will enhance the validity and applicability of the model.Read moreRead less

Therapeutic approaches to Alzhemier's and Parkinson's disease as well as to brain injury arising from stroke rely on a thorough understanding of the molecular and physiological mechanisms of normal growth of this tissue. These are the very processes that need to be reactivated in these diseases for recovery of function. This project seeks to understand normal development of the brain and in doing so it will expose novel targets for therapy in the aged. Read moreRead less
