VitroGroR is a growth factor complex which enhances cell growth and migration, and hence has great potential for treating wounds. Tissue Therapies, which holds the rights to commercialization of VitroGroR, is seeking to develop methods of delivering VitroGroR in its active form to the wound environment. Two solutions to this problem will be developed in this project; a bioactive bandage containing a novel combination of microspheres and a hydrogel matrix, and secondly an in-situ polymerisable matrix for treatment of deep wounds. The growth factor complex will be protected from aggressive proteases through encapsulation within microspheres, and the use of MMP-inhibiting comonomers.Read moreRead less
Transdermal penetration of corticosteroids in the dog. Topical application of corticosteroids enhances drug concentration and effectiveness in the treatment of skin diseases. Topical application of corticosteroids enhances drug concentration and effectiveness in the treatment of skin diseases. Most topical corticosteroid preparations have been developed for human use and are poorly efficacious or promote a high incidence of adverse effects in dogs. This project will characterize corticosteroid penetration through canine skin to permit the development of suitable topical formulations to more effectively control skin diseases in the dog. Skin diseases are a significant problem in veterinary science and this project will not only provide an effective therapeutic option, but also reduce animal (and client) distress when suffering skin disease and/or adverse effects from traditional therapy.Read moreRead less
Investigation of the biology of insulin-like growth factor 1 and its derivatives for the development of new therapeutics. This project will investigate the biology of insulin-like growth factor 1, a key molecule in growth, development and, in particular, the wound healing process. Its success will lead to improved treatments for non-healing (chronic) wounds and, potentially, new anti-cancer treatments.
Relationship between melanosome distribution and skin colour. This work seeks to examine how the colour of our skin is related to the distribution of melanosomes. This work may allow us to better understand how to develop novel therapies that may alter skin colour and provide protection from the sun (frontier technologies) but may also, in the longer term, lead to healthier approaches to skin management - especially for ageing skin.
Development of carbohydrate-based drug delivery systems. Chronic skin disorders affect 5% of the population. Treatment is challenging and long term because these disorders are chronic and unpredictable. Currently the most potent therapies for psoriasis are administered systemically. Long term usage of these therapies causes side effects such as kidney or liver damage. This proposal describes a new approach to the topical treatment of psoriasis where potent drugs are linked to a hyaluronan sca ....Development of carbohydrate-based drug delivery systems. Chronic skin disorders affect 5% of the population. Treatment is challenging and long term because these disorders are chronic and unpredictable. Currently the most potent therapies for psoriasis are administered systemically. Long term usage of these therapies causes side effects such as kidney or liver damage. This proposal describes a new approach to the topical treatment of psoriasis where potent drugs are linked to a hyaluronan scaffold molecule and are directly applied to the diseased tissue. Advantages of this approach include targeted drug delivery mediated by hyaluronan receptor processes and potential amelioration of the observed drug toxicities.Read moreRead less
DNA methylation-based diagnosis of cancer and identification of novel therapeutic targets. In our aging society, cancer represents a severe economic and quality-of-life threat. In our aging society, cancer represents a severe economic and quality-of-life threat. DNA methylation switches genes off, and recently, it was shown that defects in DNA methylation contribute to human diseases including cancer. This project will identify defects in DNA methylation associated with cancer. Identifying these defects will enable us to design non-invasive, early diagnostic tests for cancer on blood or bodily excretions, and to pursue novel therapeutic approaches for treating cancer. The expected outcomes would generate exports to markets in the USA and Europe and replace imports of drugs and technology to treat cancer.Read moreRead less
New tools to activate and silence neural circuits. Many neurological disorders occur as a result of neuron cell death that is initiated by excessive levels of excitatory activity in central nervous system neurons. This project will develop and validate a new treatment for these disorders that involves silencing excessive neuronal activity using a safe, commonly prescribed drug.
Development and commercialization of novel diagnostic assays for the early detection of acute dengue virus infection. Dengue is an emerging disease of the tropics and is endemic in more than 100 countries with up to 100 million cases annually. Of these, 500,000 result in dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF), a serious life-threatening complication of dengue virus infection. Dengue activity in northern Australia has increased in recent years with suggestions that it may be coming endemic in this count ....Development and commercialization of novel diagnostic assays for the early detection of acute dengue virus infection. Dengue activity in northern Australia has increased in recent years with suggestions that it may be coming endemic in this country. Early diagnosis, using NS1 based assays should facilitate containment of such outbreaks through earlier identification, treatment, isolation and strategic mosquito control.Read moreRead less
Sino-Australian neurogenetics initiative. This project will undertake large population studies to identify genes that are associated with motor neuron disease, schizophrenia and intracranial haemorrhage. The project will determine genetic markers, aid development of diagnostic tools and identify new therapeutic targets for these common heritable neurological diseases.
Development of an effective vaccine for chlamydial infection: optimisation of a non-toxic cholera toxin-based adjuvant to generate a protective mucosal response. Chlamydial genital infections are the most common sexually transmitted infection in Australia and the world and impose a major health burden on the community. Chlamydial infections are also associated with cardiovascular disease, Australia's biggest killer and asthma, another condition that has increased significantly in prevalence in the past 10 years. This project will evaluate the effectiveness of a new adjuvant as a first step towards the development of a vaccine to target these important infections.Read moreRead less
