Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a common heritable cause of intellectual disability and co-morbid autism, caused by epigenetic silencing of the FMR1 gene. This will be the world’s largest FXS mutation prevalence study conducted in 100,000 newborns using a novel test targeting epigenetic changes, and will also explore the prognostic outcomes, costs and benefits associated with FXS newborn screening, providing conclusions regarding expanding the current newborn screening in Australia to include FXS.

The metabolic syndrome is characterised by abdominal obesity, high blood pressure and an increased risk of diabetes development. It is clear from our own observations that the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is important in the generation of obesity-related illness and, through its stimulation of the liver, plays an important role in the development of obesity-related liver disease. We will target the SNS in order to reduce the burden of obesity-related liver disease.

Chronic visceral pain is a common and debilitating condition arising from numerous diseases that affect our internal organs. There is a desperate need for more information about the mechanisms responsible for signalling chronic visceral pain to provide therapies and potentially find a cure for it. Our research focuses on ?-conotoxins (small peptides from marine cone snail venom) as novel potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of chronic visceral pain.

Metabolic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease impose enormous medical and economic burdens on Western societies. Our research is focussed on the enzyme AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) which acts as the fuel gauge of the cell and is a promising drug target for combating metabolic diseases. Our discoveries provide critical insight on how AMPK is switched on by both energy demand and drugs, and will greatly assist development of AMPK-targetted therapeutics.

1 in 25 children are born from IVF treatment - incredibly- to our shame; no data exists as to the long-term health of these children. Presented is a unique opportunity, which would be exceedingly difficult to replicate elsewhere in the world, to determine the long-term consequences of IVF upon the development of the offspring, by comparing their growth, metabolic, respiratory, psychological, immunological and reproductive development to a representative sample of WA children- the Raine cohort.

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is the most common form of inherited intellectual disability and autism and is caused by a faulty switch in the gene FMR1. We have discovered new DNA regions important in FXS. The project aims to explain how these new regions regulate the FMR1 gene. This is essential for the discovery and validation of new avenues for earlier diagnosis, treatments and therapies for children and adults with FMR1 disorders and also for informing reproductive decisions.
