Antiretroviral drugs reduce morbidity and mortality for people living with HIV however there is currently no cure for HIV. I will undertake a series of studies that will contribute to HIV cure research in Australia. This includes describing novel strategies to identify and measure residual dormant HIV in individuals on suppressive antiretroviral therapy, determining the effect of cancer drugs on dormant HIV, and exploring the attitudes of people living with HIV towards cure research.

This project aims to evaluate how service delivery can enhance the impact of directly acting antivirals (DAA) on hepatitis C treatment uptake in three parts: i) To assess the impact of ten integrated hepatology nurses on treatment uptake in Victoria ii) To assess the feasibility of patient driven contact tracing to treat hepatitis C with DAA in a study of people who inject drugs iii) To assess the impact of offering DAA therapy in primary health care compared with a hospital.

Summary
This project will trial strategies for attaining clinical best practice in sexual health with an overall objective of reducing the high rates of sexually transmitted infection in remote Aboriginal communities in central and northern Australia. The trial will take place in 21 communities of which seven will be randomly assigned in each of the three years of the trial. This trial will determine whether strengthening primary health services can reduce the level of these infections.

The Australian Health Management Plan for Pandemic Influenza is based on data from past and current influenza. A newly-emerged influenza strain is likely to differ in some respects. This project will develop practical ways to adapt the management plan to the emerged virus from early pandemic data. It will determine the data needed to do this efficiently, to ensure that Australia receives the greatest benefit from its antiviral drugs, vaccines and other public health interventions introduced.
