A novel, practical 3D vision system is proposed as a platform for fundamental applied research in 3D data acquisition, object modelling and object recognition. The significance of the vision system lies in the advancement of knowledge in three key areas of computer vision, registration, recognition and error propagation. The result is a system capable of sensing, modelling and identifying arbitrarily shaped free-form objects in a scene, an attribute lacking in current systems. Such a system can provide substantial economic benefits to industrial procedures such as grasp planning and quality control.

The proposed research will target the development of such systems to enable the concept of 'stick-on cameras'. Examples of potential applications for this new imaging technology include head-mounted camera patches for rescue workers, smart credit card capable of identifying its user by fingerprint technology, discrete monitoring of venues, preventing driver's drowsiness inside a car but also assisting in medical diagnosis and minimally invasive surgery. This leading edge research will enhance the reputation of Australia as a leader in frontier technologies.

Unified Representations of Multimodal Biometrics for Robust Authentication and Identification. We propose two biometric systems based on two novel unified multimodal biometric representations. These systems will have a great potential impact on the national economy by reducing frauds related to identity, credit card transactions, and ATM withdrawals. Statistics show that these types of frauds are dramatically increasing in the U.S.A., the U.K., and Australia. Our systems will also have government applications and will impact on the national security in areas related to immigration, passport and driver's license controls. Forensic applications include criminal identification, crime scene investigation and corpse identification (as in the case of the victims of the Asian tsunami 2004).

On-line structural integrity assessment of advanced composite airframe with senor network. The project addresses frontier technologies that lead to solutions to one of the critical key issues forming the Australian community - online integrity/safety assessment of structures or asset including aircraft, ships, buildings and bridges. The community benefits significantly if potential disaster due to occurrence of damage associated with those structures can be prevented - the ultimate aim of researchers for decades. It is imperative that Australian industries remain technologically ahead of international competitors. Outcomes of the project will lead to novel technologies for real-time structural health monitoring and integrity assessment, bringing significant improvement in operation safety and driving down maintenance cost.

Built in state-of-the-art deep sub-0.25um CMOS technologies, these imagers will feature extensive in-pixel processing power in contrast to the currently commercially available CMOS vision sensors. This will enable on-chip vision-based decision making but also increased on-chip image processing. These innovative system-on-chip features will contribute towards the positioning of CMOS imaging technology as the technology of choice for most digital imaging applications, in place of the existing, and so far unchallenged, CCD technology.

With the current state of the art, a performance at the Sydney Opera House cannot be recorded and broadcast such that you can listen to it as if you are in the best seat of the house. The goal of our project is to develop the ultimate form of multi-channel audio broadcasting to create this experience. We will develop and implement effective systems for recording, broadcasting and playback of 3D audio in three different scenarios: individual headphone reproduction; small loudspeaker array reproduction; and large loudspeaker array reproduction. We will create optimal recording techniques and broadcasting software for each of these playback techniques.

A 3D CMOS Vision Sensor with Pixel Level Analog-to-Digital Converter and Intelligent Processing. The aim of this research project is to build a smart vision sensor using advanced 3D technology. The smart sensor will consist of two vertically stacked levels comprising the vision sensor chip with pixel-level Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) and the processing chip for edge and motion detection. The pixel level ADC will be based on new architectures offering improved performance in terms of dynamic range, fill-factor, and signal-to-noise ratio. Both the vision and the processing chips will be realised in standard CMOS technology, which make the smart vision sensor very suitable for low cost consumer electronic applications.

Mobile spatial-audio telecommunication systems. We will develop an inter-personal electronic spatial-audio telecommunication system that works outdoors in a mobile environment. Talkers using the system will be acoustically aware of other talkers? locations because the communication channel is rendered as 3D audio. The system provides situational awareness useful during activities such as fire fighting, search and rescue, surveillance, audio/video teleconferencing. The research investigates system implementations using wearable computing with personal location sensors (differential GPS) and personal orientation sensors (hybrid gyroscopic/magnetic system). The work will result in fundamental data relevant to the development, testing and validation of a mobile telecommunication system with individualised spatial audio.
