    Implementation and Evaluation of an Intensive Music Education Program for Schoolchildren. Music training is vital for schoolchildren. Children achieve goal-satisfaction and enhanced coordination from sport, focus and independence from schoolwork, and the opportunity to express emotions productively via dance/drama. Music training is unique in that it combines these benefits, and can lead to improvement in non-musical outcomes (e.g., maths, self-esteem), while potentially reaching otherwise dise .... Implementation and Evaluation of an Intensive Music Education Program for Schoolchildren. Music training is vital for schoolchildren. Children achieve goal-satisfaction and enhanced coordination from sport, focus and independence from schoolwork, and the opportunity to express emotions productively via dance/drama. Music training is unique in that it combines these benefits, and can lead to improvement in non-musical outcomes (e.g., maths, self-esteem), while potentially reaching otherwise disenfranchised adolescent groups. Music training programs in Australia vary in quality and effectiveness, and unfortunately, under-resourced communities offer little. The proposed music program will be offered to all students within selected schools, and will provide information on the value of music in the Australian school curriculum.

A series of interconnected studies will refine theory in ways that can be used to mobilize public awareness of the life-long sense of wellbeing and enjoyment that artistic appreciation and participation in music can offer, and future efforts to promote more effective strategies for the provision of music education for all young people in Australia and beyond.

    A cross-cultural study of the music play practices of children in school playgrounds. This study seeks to observe, collect and analyse children's musical play in school playgrounds in a range of social, cultural and national contexts in order to determine the characteristics of music, movement and language; teaching and learning processes; degree of cross-cultural transmission; factors affecting language use; and effects of audiovisual media on games. This research will challenge misconceptions .... A cross-cultural study of the music play practices of children in school playgrounds. This study seeks to observe, collect and analyse children's musical play in school playgrounds in a range of social, cultural and national contexts in order to determine the characteristics of music, movement and language; teaching and learning processes; degree of cross-cultural transmission; factors affecting language use; and effects of audiovisual media on games. This research will challenge misconceptions regarding children's musical play on which which major international music education pedagogies (Kodaly and Orff) are based and will inform current music education practices relating to learning processes and music repertoire.
