High blood pressure is a significant health problem and may result from the kidneys not being able to get rid of salt properly. The mechanisms underlying this are unclear. I will investigate the role of a kidney protein, called AMPK, in salt excretion in mice. I will also look at the effects that diabetes and obesity have on the function of this protein. Breathlessness is a common symptom that can be caused by diseases of the heart, lungs or muscles. It is not uncommon that the cause is undiagnosed either because conventional tests do not yield a diagnosis, or because an individual suffers from multiple diseases. This research aims to use invasive cardiopulmonary exercise testing, a highly specialised test which simultaneously measures breathing, heart and muscle function, to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with breathlessness.

High blood pressure is a common medical condition leading to death and disability. Some people with high blood pressure do not respond to medical treatment due to abnormal signals from the kidneys that tell the body to increase the blood pressure. We have designed a microwave catheter that can be placed inside the kidney artery and used to heat the kidney nerves around it to stop the relay of these messages. This will lower blood pressure for people who cannot control it with medications alone.

Pre-eclampsia is the commonest serious medical problem in pregnancy. Mothers who have this condition are at risk of seizures, stroke and other neurological problems, which can cause death or long-term morbidity. Treatments for pre-eclampsia aim to prevent these problems. Through ultrasound imaging of a blood vessel at the back of the eye, this study will provide new insights into how these treatments change the brain's blood supply in mothers with pre-eclampsia.

Patients with hypertension are at increased risk of heart rhythm disorders, yet little is known if treatment of high blood pressure will improve abnormal rhythm. Renal denervation is a new and effective treatment for severe hypertension; this study will assess the adverse changes in heart structure and function due to severe hypertension, and investigate whether renal denervation can ameliorate these changes on a structural and electrical level.
The prevalence of liver cirrhosis worldwide is rising due. The majority of the morbidity and mortality, which arises with cirrhosis, occurs due to the development of portal hypertension. In cirrhosis unexplained vasodilatation of the splanchnic circulation occurs contributing significantly to portal hypertension.
