Summary
This fellowship will investigate diseases of the gastrointestinal tract of children. The research program will undertake a range of is a highly innovative projects including; development of an effective rotavirus vaccine to be administered to newborns; genetic characterisation of rotavirus strains able to escape vaccine protection; and how alterations in the human gut microbiome (bacteria and viruses) influence the development/relapse of CrohnÍs disease.
Bacterial pathogens are a major cause of illness and death, producing diseases ranging from acute infections to cancer. However, not all infected individuals will succumb to these pathologies. What factors dictate which individuals develop these diseases is an important complex question. The core focus of my research is the identification and characterisation of novel host factors that are involved in resistance or susceptibility to bacterial-associated diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

I propose a five year program of public health research on the evaluation of innovative technologies to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and their adverse consequences in populations at highest risk; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, youth, men who have sex with men and people in high STI-burden resource-limited countries. My research over the next five years will lead to substantial improvements in the health of people at greatest risk of STIs.

The entire developed world is witnessing dramatic increases in bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs), the likes of which have not been seen since prior to the emergence of the HIV epidemic in the 1980s. My vision is to reduce the burden of STIs by identifying innovative, cost-effective approaches to STI prevention and management that are acceptable to the populations affected (including healthcare workers and people are risk of STIs) and able to be implemented on a broad scale.

My research will use statistical and mathematical models to answer questions in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. I will assess long-term outcomes in HIV positive patients, including developing risk prediction models to improve patients monitoring. I will look at strategies to improve antiretroviral treatment in developing countries in Asia. And I will identify optimal preventions strategies to reduce rates of sexually transmitted infections.

Summary
The increasing sexually transmitted infection diagnoses in Australia have considerable public health implications and there are still many questions about the most effective way to prevent and control their transmission. The goal of my fellowship is to build on my existing program of research and generate new evidence to further our understanding of the epidemiology of these infections and identify the most effective ways for their prevention and control.
My primary research focus is to understand the mechanisms underlying sleep-related breathing disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnoea, and develop better ways to diagnose and treat them. I also investigate physical therapies to improve the lives of people with chronic lung disease. Both sleep disorders and lung disease are extremely common in Australia. Improving the health and quality of life of these individuals has important personal benefit and social and economic benefits.
HIV/AIDS remains a major global threat with ?37 million individuals living with HIV in 2014. Antiretroviral drugs have transformed HIV from a death sentence into a chronic disease. Public health organisations recommend dramatic scale up of drugs for HIV treatment and prevention. However, a major threat is that drug options will be exhausted in the long-term due to drug resistance and toxicity. The major aim of this study is to advance the development of an entirely new drug class for HIV.

Summary
Over the next five years I will undertake a program of research centred on reducing the impact of blood-borne viruses and sexually transmitted infections in vulnerable populations, particularly focusing on HCV and HIV elimination. I will use innovative systems and methods to study how these infections are transmitted and develop interventions that reduce disease transmission and associated risk-behaviours (drug and alcohol use and sexual behaviours) and increased testing and treatment.

Summary
Transport into and out of the nucleus is central to the function of the cells from complex organisms such as mammals. This research program aims to improve understanding of nuclear transport and its regulation in the context of infection by medically relevant viruses, as well as in the context of cancer, and normal cell growth/development. It will contribute to developing new anti-viral therapeutics/vaccines, drug delivery strategies for cancer, and understanding causes of male infertility.
