Expand the capacity of an international multidisciplinary research network focussed on the ethical, legal and social implications of emerging biotechnologies. This project will ensure that Australia plays a central role in international debates and research activities aimed at regulating and facilitating advances in biotechnology. The project will also provide Australian researchers with direct access to key international experts in the field.
An analysis of research ethics and the ethical review process as culture and cultural process. This project explores research ethics and the ethical review process as culture and cultural process. It includes analyses of international ethics review-related documents, literature, and processes, case studies, key informant interviews, and observation of ethics committees in the process of deliberation. This project explores research ethics and the ethical review process as culture and cultural process. It includes analyses of international ethics review-related documents, literature, and processes, case studies, key informant interviews, and observation of ethics committees in the process of deliberation. It focuses primarily on work associated with the paradigms and methods used or borrowed from the social sciences and topics and populations that seem to be the most problematic. This understanding might help us better address the issues involved and allow the development of policies and applications that are less problematic for all concerned.Read moreRead less

Mobile telephone penetration in Australia is among the highest in the world. With so many Australians relying on their mobile device for secure voice and data communications, the sensitivity and magnitude of stored location information being gathered for each person is only now being realised. The collection, use and disclosure of location information by stakeholders including government agencies, private enterprise, and subscribers and their monitors needs to be regulated. This research will place Australia at the forefront of telecommunications policy, and provide legislative recommendations that can aid in overcoming the challenges to ensure subscriber privacy. A longitudinal study of the housing stability of the homeless in Victoria. This is a longitudinal panel study of the homeless in urban and rural Victoria; it will interview residents of transitional housing over two years, analysing factors that contribute to success or failure in achieving housing stability. The research starts from the assumption that homelessness is not simply a condition of being without shelter at a specific point in time, but is a situation of chronic housing instability. ....A longitudinal study of the housing stability of the homeless in Victoria. The project proposal has the support of a consortium of housing agencies in urban and rural Victoria who anticipate specific outcomes in service design evaluation and in detailed knowledge about the causes of homelessness.Read moreRead less
Network dynamics and field evolution: hubs, clusters and interorganisational ties in biotechnology. The study will support a robust biotechnology industry in Australia, which delivers economy-wide benefits and provides employment for local life scientists. The study will support a robust biotechnology industry in Australia, which delivers economy-wide benefits and provides employment for local life scientists. Although Australia has a long history of innovation and achievement in the life sciences, commercial benefits in the field have often been harvested elsewhere. Australian governments are making substantial investments in biotechnology, including education and training, directed towards developing the local industry. The proposed study will make these investments more informed, facilitating fine-grained development of public policy and industry strategy.Read moreRead less

Patent law is central to the key Australian economic aim of encouraging an innovative culture. One aspect of patent law, the opposition process, is directly linked to two important issues currently facing our patent system: improving patent quality, and minimising predatory behaviour by powerful firms. This project will assess the operation of the opposition process here, and the practice of equivalent international procedures in other jurisdictions, in order to inform Australian policy in current and ongoing negotiations towards global harmonisation. Material from this project will lead directly to proposals for improving the Australian patent system, and ensuring that it promotes, and does not retard, innovation. Read moreRead less

The RVM program focus on university-business collaboration will orient future collaborative projects and analyses. This will enhance the state-of-the-art of research evaluation in Australia over time. Extension of the CIs unique survey database will incorporate comparative dimensions into research value mapping. A focus on Australian respondents in the international database (n=1300) will lead to analyses that inform science policy and scientist human resource development in Australia. This will provide a deeper understanding of Australia’s science role in the Asia Pacific region.Read moreRead less

This research project will contribute significant national benefits because it will provide new data on the future likely requirements of 21st century researchers who will play a leading role in promoting Australia's innovation culture and economy. Government, industry, university and graduate stakeholders require an evidence-base upon which to reform Australian research training policy. By exploring the graduate employment outcomes and transitions of recent graduates and employers' perceptions of their knowledge and skills, this study will inform the development of research training quality indicators and contribute to theoretical debates about the nature of knowledge production and innovation in post-modern times.Read moreRead less
