Summary
Inflammation occurs as part of the body's natural defenses against infection or injury, but can be damaging when unregulated and can lead to cancer. Although the protein factors critical for inflammation have been carefully studied it remains unknown how ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecules can modify and regulate inflammation. This project will identify RNA molecules that control inflammatory signalling, and further translate these findings to show they contribute to the progression of cancer.
Apoptosis is a fundamental mechanism in regulating normal development and preventing cancer. Cancer cells must avoid apoptosis and also adapt to harsh metabolic environments in order to survive in the absence of effective nutrient supply and to resist the action of certain drugs. This project will provide a detailed analysis of metabolic changes allowing cells to survive long periods when the apoptotic process is absent and nutrients are limiting.

Summary
Ikaros is a protein that regulates gene expression during development of lymphocytes from blood stem cells. Ikaros has a profound importance in normal and malignant lymphocyte development, but we still do not know how it controls these processes. The aim of my study is to identify genes regulated by Ikaros and the molecular mechanisms of their regulation. This study will contribute to understanding of the regulatory network controlling the development and function of lymphocytes.
