Corrosion of heat resisting alloys in steam/hydrogen-rich environment . Hydrogen is a clean fuel for energy future. Its production and utilisation unavoidably involve water vapour and hydrogen at high temperature which is however corrosive to materials used in the system. This project aims to investigate corrosion behaviour of heat resistant alloys in the presence of both hydrogen and water vapour, mechanisms of water transport in oxide scale, and the effect of hydrogen on water vapour corrosion ....Corrosion of heat resisting alloys in steam/hydrogen-rich environment . Two-stage ignition and flame stabilisation in engine-relevant conditions. This project aims to reveal the mechanisms of ignition and flame stabilisation in the temperature and pressure conditions that exist in diesel engines, understanding of which is currently very limited despite their significant bearing on pollutants and fuel efficiency. Using massively parallel supercomputing resources, the most detailed, direct numerical simulations of ignition and flame stabilisation to date will be perfo ....Two-stage ignition and flame stabilisation in engine-relevant conditions. This proposal solves Australia’s concrete-waste-storage problems, and lowers the life-cycle costs and greenhouse-gas emissions by creating CO2 Concrete as a world-first material for high-grade applications. Using an automation system with high-tech software, innovative mixing techniques are proposed to maximise bonding at interfacial transition zones, strengthening CO2 Concrete's quality. The new material CO2 Concrete is created, ....High-Grade CO2 Concrete for Low Life-Cycle Costing and Emissions. Composite oxides as next-generation photocatalysts for solar energy capture. This project aims to prepare new photocatalysts that capture and convert solar energy to stored energy by directly splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen, a perfectly clean and renewable fuel. The project will use a "bottom-up" nanoscale approach, in which compounds with different chemical and electronic properties, but with compatible crystal structures in at least one dimension, are assembled in a single synthetic s ....Composite oxides as next-generation photocatalysts for solar energy capture. By making composites of compounds the band gaps - crucial to capturing light - and surfaces -crucial to evolving hydrogen and oxygen gas- of which complement each other, the project can deliver higher performing materials at a lower cost than can be achieved by conventional top-down modification. Fuel stratification to enable higher load operation of homogeneous charge compression ignition engines. The project aims to provide knowledge needed to solve a problem impeding the development of an efficient and clean engine concept known as homogeneous charge compression ignition. Fuel stratification using alternative fuels will be studied fundamentally and used to reduce the problematic rapid pressure changes that occur in these engines.
The stabilisation of lifted jet flames in hot oxidiser. The project will contribute fundamental insights on a crucial phenomenon in diesel engines: the detachment of the flame from the fuel nozzle, which strongly affects harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulates. Detailed numerical simulations will be used to reveal the mechanism of flame stabilisation, knowledge that will aid the development of cleaner engines.
Geological sequestration of carbon dioxide in deep saline aquifers: coupled flow-mechanical considerations. Deep saline aquifers have been routinely proposed as sites for long-term, large-scale storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, as an option to assist the abatement of global warming. This project investigates expected engineering behaviour of deep saline aquifer reservoirs and their stability following CO2 sequestration.
Carbon-free Energy Storage and Conversion Using Ammonia as a Mediator. This project aims to develop essential technologies for ammonia-mediated energy storage, hydrogen production, and electricity generation. This project expects to generate new understandings on designing novel multi-atom-cluster catalysts for the critical ammonia synthesis, electrolysis, and oxidation processes using interdisciplinary approaches. The expected outcomes of this project include multi-functional electrocatalysts, ....Carbon-free Energy Storage and Conversion Using Ammonia as a Mediator. We aim to improve fundamental understanding of flame stabilisation and structure in conditions relevant to axially staged combustion employed in gas turbines, in which an initial ultra-lean premixed stage is followed by a short residence time stage at higher equivalence ratios. This concept enables high turbine entry temperatures and thus high efficiency while limiting emissions of nitrogen oxides, and, importantly, enables improved ....Flame stabilisation and structure in axially staged combustion.
