More than 1 in 3 Australians report having 3 or more chronic conditions and the majority of older people now take 5 or more medicines. The safety of medicines on their own, and in combination is therefore an issue of significant importance to Australia. This research will develop and assess data methods to monitor the safety of medicines after they are released on the market and then provide and assess interventions for GPs to support improvements in medicine use.

Summary
The identification, prevention and management of cardiovascular and chronic disease risk factors and understanding impact on clinical outcomes is fundamental to improving health and well-being. The program of work encapsulated in this application utilises modern epidemiological research methods involving large scale clinical trials, registries and epidemiological modelling to advance our understanding and provide new directions for cardiovascular disease prevention and management.
Ovarian and endometrial cancer affect >3,200 women each year in Australia and 3 or 4 women die from these cancers every day. The overall aim of my program of research is to reduce the burden of these cancers in future generations of Australian women by increasing our understanding of (i) what causes them, (ii) how we can optimise patient management to enhance patient outcomes and (ii) how lifestyle changes might improve quality and life and survival, for women who are diagnosed with them.

This application for a Senior Principal Research Fellowship is to enable me to address the enormous burden of musculoskeletal conditions - an important, but understudied and underfunded area of health/medical research. My focus is the most costly and prevalent musculoskeletal conditions of low back pain and osteoarthritis, and other neuromuscular conditions such as incontinence. My aim is to improve outcomes by discovering how to apply the right treatment to the right person at the right time.

My research targets mechanisms underlying human movement, ways in which they can be deranged, and ways in which interventions can diminish impairments. It focuses on gaps in understanding and in clinical practice. Work in our broad ‘Motor Impairment’ NHMRC Program underpin my research. It is supplemented by new work on respiratory neurophysiology which has already delivered basic and clinical insight into neural control of the main breathing muscles and more recently upper airway muscles.

Improving the control of infectious diseases requires the evaluation of interventions that prevent disease at the population level and successfully treat infections at the individual level. This proposal brings together advanced biostatistical research with mathematical modelling to discover novel methods for evaluating antimalarial treatments and malaria vaccine candidates, leading to new insights in infectious disease control and building capacity in this emerging cross-disciplinary field.
The major objective of this research is to advance the development of highly effective malaria vaccines through i) defining mechanisms and targets of human immunity to malaria to establish a rational basis for vaccine design; ii) advancing the development of lead candidates and promising new candidates and combinations; iii) advancing vaccine platforms that induce potent protective immune responses; iv) develop and validate urgently-needed immunological assays for vaccine development and testing

The world is facing unprecedented threats from epidemics. In 2014 Ebola showed that issues such as quarantine, personal protective equipment and improved health system capacity are just as critical as drugs and vaccines, yet these are under-researched. Professor MacIntyre is an international expert epidemic control. She will lead a strategic research program to improve control of emerging and re-emerging infections, using her expertise in vaccines, personal protective equipment and biosecurity.
