As public interest on environmental conservation increases, tougher regulations on vehicle emission and fuel consumption will be implemented causing likely further restrictions on fuel consumption while operating the air conditioning system. Currently air conditioning and engine systems are controlled by two separate programs and lack effective communication between each other. This research aims to gain better understanding of the quantitative effects of car air-conditioning systems on fuel consumption and various air pollutant emissions, and develop an integrated simulation tool that links the air conditioning, engine fuel consumption and emission to assist the achievement of optimum vehicle energy and emission management.Read moreRead less
Non-Contact In-process Shape Measurement of Windscreens. Optical techniques have been widely used for non-contact measurement of the 3-D shape of diffusely reflecting surfaces. However, there is no evidence for the successful implementation of a real-time shape measurement system for large specular surfaces, despite the many important industrial applications. The aim of this project is to develop optically-based techniques to measure the shape of specular and transparent surfaces in real time in ....Non-Contact In-process Shape Measurement of Windscreens. The aim of this project is to develop optically-based techniques to measure the shape of specular and transparent surfaces in real time in an industrial environment. The main outcome of the research will be a prototype on-line shape measurement system to control the quality of car windscreens.Read moreRead less
Laser based combustion diagnostics of an automotive development engine. Automotive emissions regulations will continue to tighten in the foreseeable future. Automotive emissions regulations will continue to tighten in the foreseeable future. Engine manufacturers are therefore undertaking substantial research and development in order to meet future legal requirements. One technology with proven emissions performance is gasoline direct injection (GDI).
This project requests funding for the detailed study of a GDI development engine. Sophisticated, laser based diagnostics and an ?optical access? engine will be used to examine the fuel spray, fluid motion and pollutant formation inside the cylinder during operation. Numerical simulations will complement these experiments. Using these results, the mechanisms of pollutant formation in a GDI engine will be determined.

The aim of this project is to develop an automated, on-line, real-time, inspection system that can detect incorrect placement or absence of specific components on the underside of a vehicle structure. The inspection system is to be integrated with a factory wide quality control and information gathering system. Development of an automated inspection system will enable the reliable identification of defects and tracking of quality levels in the final assembly station. The expected outcome is the design and implementation in prototype form, of an intelligent, automated inspection system that can accommodate a wide range of product variants.Read moreRead less
