Protecting The Public From Emerging Infectious Diseases

Emerging infectious diseases and pandemics cause potentially enormous but unpredictable health and socioeconomic impacts. This CRE will develop and integrate new technologies, including fingerprinting the entire gene complement of micro-organisms and new electronic communication platforms, to improve the precision and speed of public health responses. We will develop ethics research-based policy frameworks to enable implementation of these technologies into public health practice and policy.

This CRE develops a new solutions-based approach to overuse of unnecessary, ineffective healthcare. Overuse causes harm and diverts resources from areas of need. We will produce new solutions to address four drivers of overuse. We will: build health literacy in patients, communities and health professionals; respond to changing screening and diagnostic technology; address financial drivers; and change clinical practices, to minimise harm and waste, achieving more sustainable healthcare for all.

This research will generate new knowledge to improve health outcomes by investigating expenditure and financing of dental care, dental practice performance, and the impact of dental services on oral health outcomes. This is needed for health policy to deliver dental care that promotes good oral health, to identify characteristics of the dental delivery system that deliver productive outputs with good outcomes, and testing oral health outcomes in relation to the type of dental care received.
Reducing Salt Intake Using Food Policy Interventions

Excess salt consumption has been identified as a leading cause of ill health and a priority area for action. Australia and most other countries around the world have signed up to the 30% reduction in mean population salt intake recommended by the World Health Organisation, but the strategies that will be used to achieve this goal remain to be decided. This Centre will address the design, implementation, evaluation and roll out of real-world food policy interventions targeting salt reduction.

Suicide is the most common cause of death in Australians aged 15-44. The goals of the Centre of Research Excellence in Women’s Health in the 21st Century are to examine how changes in the health system impact on women’s health and how changes in women’s lives impact on their health and health care needs. This research program will focus on four priority health issues of particular relevance to women: reproductive health, mental health, cardiovascular conditions and musculoskeletal problems; and use data from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health.
