The purpose of the project is to provide a centralised state-of-the-art facility that supports research programs in plant science, agricultural research, food safety, animal and human health research and separation science. Potential benefits from the project include increased agricultural productivity and food security, improved knowledge of age and injury-related changes in neurophysiology, helping to prevent the extinction of iconic Tasmanian wildlife and the development of advanced micro-electroseparation technologies.

    Summary
    Development of an immune enhancing vaccine to protect Tasmanian devils against a contagious cancer. The iconic Tasmanian devil is threatened with extinction from a uniformly fatal transmissible facial cancer. Our team has shown in proof of concept that the cancer cells can be recognised by the devil immune system. This project will develop and test a vaccine against the tumour, which will ultimately protect devils in the wild.

This project aims at establishing a facility for the detection, quantification and rapid mapping of elements and their isotopes in nanoparticles and a diverse set of biological and earth materials. The facility consists of a latest generation ICP-ToF-MS that can simultaneously collect a full suite of isotopic information (Li to U) from liquid samples or, in combination with laser ablation and laser induced breakdown spectr .... It will enhance capabilities and sample throughput in environmental science, geoscience, biology and cultural heritage research, significantly accelerating the discovery of new ore bodies, improving environmental risk assessment and assisting research in cancer biology.

    Summary
    Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) is an eye condition in which flaky material deposits in the eye, greatly increasing the risk of cataract and glaucoma which can lead to blindness. PEX is also associated with heart disease, strokes and aneurysms. Cataract surgery in PEX patients has a higher rate of complications. In this project we will determine the nature of PEX material and why it forms. This knowlege will facilitate better diagnosis and treatment of PEX preventing associated blindness.
