Summary
The serious effects of frequent bullying suffered by targets remains a major public health problem, with limited evidence to help school staff to successfully treat students who frequently bully others. This study is innovative as it involves students at a time of heightened risk of bullying and measures the additional contribution of comprehensive training and support to school staff, such as school psychologists who work with students who bully, to a whole school bullying prevention program.

The current project aims to identify the most cost effective methods to reduce peer victimisation in schools. This will combine programs applied across the whole school with a more targeted program building resilience in vulnerable children. I am a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Western Australia and the Telethon Kids Institute. My research develops and delivers interventions that improve the quality of life, health, education, safety and social justice outcomes for Australian children. My work is particularly focused on ways to reduce harms from bullying and cyberbullying among children and adolescents.
The Impact of the Kids' Science State Initiative on Scientific Literacy in the Western Australian Community. This research will investigate how participation in the Kids' Science State initiative in Western Australia (a partnership between Scitech Discovery Centre in Perth and the Rio Tinto WA Future Fund) impacts on children, teachers, parents and other community members in terms of promoting scientific literacy. Protect from harm or lead into danger? The influence of peers in leisure activities on adolescent behaviour. When are peers a bad influence? This project will offer answers about the leisure settings that expose young people to risk and those that protect them from harm during the high school years. This research will also help identify those youth who may be especially vulnerable to negative effects of peer influence.

Summary
Increasing childhood obesity and reduced physical activity are major health issues in Australia. Three quarters of Australian children play electronic games and this is widely thought to reduce their physical activity. Whilst the effect of TV viewing is well understood, the impact of electronic games is not. This study will test whether access to electronic games results in decreased physical activity in children. We need to understand the impact this popular activity is having on child health.
