The expected outcome will be to establish a new research base for the writing and interpreting of 19th century Australian history as well as completing the objective of the original founder of the series, Frederick Watson, who in 1914 observed that "history in its truest form can be founded only on a careful and studied examination of the records themselves".Read moreRead less
Archaeological Geophysics at Port Arthur. This project will apply geophysical technology for rapid non-invasive archaeological investigations at Port Arthur, Australia's premier convict era historical site.
It will be the first comprehensive integrated geophysical study of a major European archaeological site in Australia and will provide a framework for future geophysical archaeological investigations at other Australian historic sites.
The main direct outcomes from this project will be ....Archaeological Geophysics at Port Arthur.
The main direct outcomes from this project will be an improved understanding of the location and nature of obscured cultural features at Port Arthur and a significant improvement in the efficiency of archaeological investigations.

The Silent Buildings of Willow Court: testing a new and innovative model for cultural heritage assessment. This pilot project is fuelled by an urgent need to assess the resources of the historic Willow Court Precinct, Australia's longest serving mental health facility (1827-2000). The 18-hectare Precinct, with its now abandoned buildings, is located in one of Australia's most economically deprived regions, Tasmania's Derwent River Valley. The 18-hectare Precinct, with its now abandoned buildings, is located in one of Australia's most economically deprived regions, Tasmania's Derwent River Valley. In June 2002 the Precinct was acquired by the local Council. At the same time, a theoretical model for measuring the condition and pressures on historic sites was being developed by the state government's Cultural Heritage Advisory Group. This project will use the Willow Court Precinct to test the model.Read moreRead less
Outflows, Jets and Plumes. This project studies how fluid flows out from a small concentrated object into a second surrounding fluid. New solution methods will be provided, and new results about how these fluid flows evolve will be obtained. These are important problems with significance in modelling underwater explosions. They are also important in astrophysics, and will help explain the shapes of outflows from some stars or galaxies. New solution methods will be provided, and new results about how these fluid flows evolve will be obtained. These are important problems with significance in modelling underwater explosions. They are also important in astrophysics, and will help explain the shapes of outflows from some stars or galaxies. The outcomes of the project will be a deeper mathematical understanding of which outflow shapes are stable, and under what circumstances they might become unstable. This will provide valuable information about galaxy shapes, and a new suite of computational methods for solving such problems.Read moreRead less

This Network brings together key researchers and practitioners interested in the nature and evolution of Australian identity, memory and heritage, including heritage and museum professionals, and scholars in environmental studies, history, geography, cultural studies, Aboriginal studies, architecture, urban policy, archaeology and materials conservation. It comes under two Commonwealth Research Priority Areas: Environmentally Sustainable Australia, and Safeguarding Australia. The Network enables broader understanding of these Priority Areas by examining cultural and historical factors, providing the basis of more far-reaching and effective solutions to current problems. The Network facilitates sharing of information and research including specific collaborative projects in these research areas.Read moreRead less
