The Power of Giving: Australian Women Philanthropists, 1880-2000. This collaborative project with the National Foundation for Australian Women explores the changing extent and nature of Australian women's philanthropic giving since1880. It will test the hypothesis that these activities both reflected broader constructions of gender and shaped civil society and public policy. This collaborative project with the National Foundation for Australian Women explores the changing extent and nature of Australian women's philanthropic giving since1880. It will test the hypothesis that these activities both reflected broader constructions of gender and shaped civil society and public policy. The outcome will be enhanced understanding of changing gender relations, and elite women's identity, and a greatly expanded knowledge of the third sector. Given women's increasing wealth, such an understanding is not only of scholarly interest but is crucial for the nonprofit sector, including our industry partner, and for government interest in promoting philanthropic giving in Australia.Read moreRead less
Mechanistic investigation of fluorinated coatings for stone preservation. We will investigate mechanisms governing the synthesis of a latex used for stone preservation. This latex is made from novel and unusual starting materials, and will be the most complex system for which mechanisms have been investigated. We will redesign the synthesis procedure to control particle size and composition of the functional species at the particle surface. This will enable both particle size and surface composi ....Mechanistic investigation of fluorinated coatings for stone preservation. This will enable both particle size and surface composition to be tailored as desired. The results will be used to investigate the influence of these quantities on interactions between particles and sandstone surfaces. The outcomes will be used by the industrial partner to devise improved protective coatings for stone surfaces in Australian conditions.Read moreRead less
Australian fossil marine reptiles: a research and regional museum program. Australian Mesozoic marine reptile fossils are common but poorly studied. Australian Mesozoic marine reptile fossils are common but poorly studied. Two of the most productive localities - Richmond QLD, Coober Pedy SA - are internationally important, spanning a poorly known stratigraphic interval of marine reptile evolution and representing a high-latitude geographic region subject to near freezing conditions. Such preservation occurs nowhere else and provides a unique opportunity for anatomical, systematic and palaeobiological investigations. Such research benefits local communities because it forms the basis for regional museum displays, generates long-term tourism revenue, and encourages geological resources to be viewed as valuable natural assets to be responsibly managed for the future.Read moreRead less
Asymptotics of the exponentially small. Asymptotic analysis plays a vital role in studying the complex interfacial dynamics that are fundamental for practical problems in fluid mechanics such as the withdrawal of oil and gas from underground reservoirs and the optimal design of ship hulls to minimise wave drag. These applications exhibit extremely small physical effects that may be crucially important but cannot be described using classical asymptotic analysis. This project will develop state of the art mathematical techniques in exponential asymptotics to address this deficiency in the classical theory, and provide a deeper understanding of pattern formation, instabilities and wave propagation on the interface between two fluids.Read moreRead less
The African origins of Asian and Australian lithic technologies: Exploring modern human origins and dispersals using new techniques of core analysis. This project will demonstrate that Australia is committed to understanding the origins of modern humans and solving research problems within and beyond our geographic region. This project will demonstrate that Australia is committed to understanding the origins of modern humans and solving research problems within and beyond our geographic region. The history of modern human evolution in Africa has significant implications for the origins of the first Australians, Indians and Asians and will contribute to an understanding of our shared and recent common ancestry and the emergence of human diversity. Australian archaeological innovations, especially when applied to global issues such as human evolution, will continue to showcase Australian scientific expertise and achievements. The study of problem-solving and technological innovation will help understand the sophisticated nature of early Australian peoples.Read moreRead less

The central goal of this pilot project is the development and implementation of an Australian archaeological digital collection platform based on existing High Performance Computing techniques and infrastructure. This collection will facilitate the dissemination and interchange of archaeological data across disciplines and institutions and across the public and private sectors; enhance archaeological research; and contribute to discourses about Australian cultural heritage and identity. Our case study will be the Mill Point Archaeological Project in southeast Queensland. This initiative will build on existing developments made overseas and through strategic collaborations between UQ, ANU and the San Diego Supercomputer Center at UCSD.Read moreRead less

Australian humanities researchers, many of them world leaders, are increasingly adopting digital technologies to create scholarly resources in a range of disciplines. It is imperative to provide scale and focus for such diverse, innovative research. This initiative will conduct a stocktake of the infrastructure needs of researchers engaged in digital resource creation projects, and develop a roadmap for construction and implementation of a Network to address these needs. The Australian e-Humanities Research Network will take up the challenges and opportunities of digital technologies by addressing humanities researchers? requirements for training, networking, and best-practice information and advice.Read moreRead less
The Local Spaces of Contemporary Brisbane Theatre: A Strategy for Analysing and Interpreting Theatre. This study of three Brisbane theatres benefits Brisbane's theatre community, as well as national and international communities: the project uses innovative theoretical approaches and virtual reality technology to analyse theatre productions. Its merging of different perspectives on how theatre is produced and how it may be better researched is relevant to theatre analysis everywhere. The project also connects theatre with its broader cultural context by concentrating on Brisbane's notable staging of 'local' matters. While the local is often overshadowed by the 'national,' in Brisbane, the local provides the main link between aesthetics and the cultural contextualising of theatre. Read moreRead less
The mathematics of novel magnetic memory materials. Magnetic memories are the world’s principal device for storing information. The next generation will have greatly increased access speed and data-storage capacity. This project will develop the mathematical theory of these new magnetic memory materials, a crucial first step in understanding and being able to fine-tune their properties.

This project aims to develop a unifying theoretical framework for generalised fractional models using measure theory and a new class of distributed-order nonlocal operators to simulate anomalous transport processes in heterogeneous and anisotropic porous media. The project expects to generate a mathematical foundation for fractional modelling and clarity on the role of, and relationship between, the many variants of fractional operators used in modern practice and how to impose boundary conditions on finite domains. Expected outcomes of the project include an evaluation of dimensionality and/or complexity reduction of the governing equations in fractional transport models with a focus on groundwater applications.Read moreRead less
