Summary
Over the last decade there has been a significant move toward evidence based clinical care and clinical guidelines in medical care. Despite this movement there are numerous clinical situations where evidence for any treatment is scant and where large gaps between the evidence and current practice exist. My research seeks to explore the barriers that exist in the health system that impede the uptake of evidence into practice and methods to improve patient outcomes where the evidence is poor.

I am a psychologist interested in how the way we deal with emotions is related to mental wellbeing. I am particularly interested in the importance of being flexible when dealing with our emotions and I intend to investigate this by looking at people's ability to flexibly alternate between expressing and suppressing emotions and their anxiety, adjustment, stress, depression and other emotional characteristics.

Summary
Advance care planning (ACP) is the process through which a patient can have an input into the direction of their own medical care in case they lose their ability to make medical decisions at a later time. This research will initially explore the patient, their carers, their family and their General Practitioner's conceptualise and view as the aim of ACP . These findings will then be used to guide the development and testing of a more patient-centered approach to ACP.
