Ending The Global Tuberculosis Epidemic: The Role Of Patient Costs

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $408,768.00
    Summary
TB is an important public health problem worldwide. Rates of TB are declining but not fast enough to reach targets set by the World Health Organization to end the disease by 2035. One reason why TB remains an issue is the cost of health care for patients. My research will look at the costs of TB care for patients in Papua New Guinea and will compare costs between countries. I will look at policies to protect the sick and will conduct research to determine what works best in decreasing costs.

To Investigate The Health Benefits Gained Through Employment In Land And Sea Management Ventures.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $71,003.00
    Summary
Indigenous people have extensive knowledge of sustainable land and sea management. We hypothesise that there are greater health benefits gained through employment in land and sea management ventures, and their families, than employment which does not utilise traditional knowledge. This study will give qualitative and quantitative feedback of ground level application of this relatively new employment venture and recognition of the wealth of Indigenous knowledge.

Social Disadvantage, Health Inequalities And Common Mental Disorders: Implications For Social Policy And Health Services

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $387,489.00
    Summary
Mental disorders such as anxiety and depression are more common among people who are socially disadvantaged (eg, living in poverty, welfare recipients, lone parents). This project seeks to understand why disadvantaged groups are more likely to have mental health problems, explores social differences in access to mental health services, and develops methods to reduce mental health problems that take account of these social differences and promotes greater fairness and equity.

Addressing The Health And Economic Burden Of Chronic Conditions

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $838,845.00
    Summary
I have established a successful program of health economics and health systems research at the George Institute. Over the next 5 years, I will expand this work to evaluate health financing reforms in Australia and the Asia-Pacific, and develop new evaluation methods. My research will tackle problems with the greatest disease burden worldwide and in populations with the greatest social disadvantages. It will have immediate policy relevance and involve training in a field with skills shortages.

Prevention Of Stroke And Vascular Disease

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $590,785.00
    Summary
My work focuses on the prevention of vascular disease. A major aim of mine is to improve outcome after stroke. We can test this by assessing whether individualised management plans provided to people with stroke will improve risk factors. Proper risk factor management reduces the risk of stroke recurrence. I also aim to reduce the burden of vascular disease in disadvantaged settings by finding out what risk factors are important in the development of these diseases in people living in poverty.

Family-Led Rehabilitation After Stroke In India - The ATTEND Trial

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,599,122.00
    Summary
The majority of people with stroke live in low and middle-income countries, with little or no access to stroke rehabilitation. This trial aims to demonstrate that a low-cost, family-led rehabilitation program can increase independence after stroke. This collaboration, involving Australian, Indian and UK researchers will involve 12 hospitals in India and coordinated by the George Institute for Global Health and the Indian Institute for Public Health.

The Role Of Health In Poverty Entrenchment: A New Measure Of Long-term Multidimensional Poverty For Australia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $365,562.00
    Summary
I am a health economist focused on exploring the disadvantage produced when individuals develop a health condition. This project will initially create a new multidimensional measure of long term poverty. It will then use this measure to look at how different health conditions affect the experience of long term poverty.

The Etiology Of Child Neglect In Indigenous Families And How This Correlates With Intergenerational Cycles Of Trauma And Social Disadvantage In Indigenous Communities

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $98,387.00
    Summary
This research will examine the causes of child neglect in Indigenous families and communities. The project will interview carers of children where there is a risk of child neglect to determine what social factors increase and decrease the chances of children to be neglected. The research will contribute to a better understanding of this problem from the perspective of Indigenous families and communities so that services can better meet the needs of families where there is risk of child neglect.

Building Durable Responses to Gender Inequality in Indonesia. This project aims to produce the first longitudinal and comparative study of which aspects of gender equity and women’s empowerment interventions prove most durable for addressing gender inequality in Indonesia, despite external shocks such as the pandemic. The project produces an analysis of how women might remain resilient over time and the pathways by which durability is achieved in improving women's wellbeing and gender relations in communities, and inclusive policies and institutions. Analysis will generate, translate and share new knowledge benefiting civil society partners, academics, policy makers and development practitioners in Indonesia, Australia and beyond, so gender equality interventions can better withstand future shocks.
