This project will make a contribution to the updating of literacy pedagogy to meet the needs of learners in a communications environment where digital and multimodal texts are of ever greater significance. Digital Death and Immortality. This project will create a philosophically-informed ethical approach for managing the 'digital remains' of internet users who have died. Emerging artificial intelligence technologies make it possible to reuse and interact with these digital remains. This offers new ways of commemorating the dead and for managing grief. Yet these technologies also threaten to exploit the dead and to change our relationship to them in troubling ways. Expected outcomes of the project ....Digital Death and Immortality. The preschool years are critical in forming cultural and 'racial' understandings and Australian data about children's understandings of diversity is scarce and poorly theorised. Given the national debate engendered by Australia's cultural and 'racial' diversity an urgent need exists to redress this and to improve understandings a ....Preschool children's constructions of cultural and 'racial' diversity. Ultrafast tracking of physiological processes in the human eye. Recent developments in high-resolution imaging allow individual cells in the living eye to be studied at very high speeds. This project aims to explore a new class of scientific observations of rapid phenomena including: the capture and conversion of light energy to electrical energy, the spread of pressure waves through delicate networks of blood vessels, and fast eye movements used to navigate the visual scene. This project aims to use the unique autofluorescence signature of immune cells, microglia, imaged in the retina, as an index of brain inflammation. This project expects to provide the fundamental knowledge to allow us to image microglia non-invasively and identify the presence of brain inflammation without needing to access the brain-proper. Scalable fabrication of novel mesoporous carbonaceous spheres with uniform size as effective adsorbents in water treatment. A productive route to generate mesoporous microspheres as highly effective adsorbents for toxins from algae blooms is proposed via an innovative drying technology. A breakthrough will be achieved in the practical development of novel adsorbents to ensure the availability of clean freshwater with enormous impacts for communities around Australia.
Development of the thinnest possible, multifunctional DNA-nanoparticle membranes for ultrafast filtration and smart sensing. Development of ultrathin and multifunctional membranes is currently in urgent need to improve our technologies in energy, environment and healthcare. This project will apply innovative nanobiomaterials to build such membrane systems and establish the design rules and develop key technologies.
