    Mental Health And The PATH To Midlife

    Anxiety and depression are common during early- to mid-adulthood and a major cause of disability. Few studies track individuals over this age range or assess how their experience of anxiety/depression affects them at midlife when many of life’s work, family and personal achievements coalesce. The PATH to Midlife project extends an existing community survey to understand the patterns of anxiety and depression from early to mid-adulthood and identify the personal, social and economic consequences.

    Developmental Schizotypy In The General Population: Early Risk Factors And Predictive Utility.

    This study will determine early childhood risk factors for psychosis-proneness in children aged 11 years, and emerging signs and symptoms of mental health disorders of these children, using population data from the NSW Child Development Study. Determining risk for psychosis as early as possible in the life course will enable the provision of preventative interventions to children at critical points in development.

    HIV Treatment As Prevention: A Longitudinal Assessment Of Population Effectiveness

    This project is a large-scale evaluation of an HIV strategy known as ‘treatment as prevention’ (TasP). Through routine and repeat HIV testing for gay men and early treatment initiation following diagnosis, TasP aims to reduce HIV community infection rates. Through the establishment of a large cohort of gay men in NSW and Victoria, this study will track HIV testing, treatment and management to assess the real-world efficacy of TasP for reducing HIV infections among this at-risk population.

The findings will directly benefit future management of this significant health iss .... One of the most important recent breakthroughs in clinical medicine is the approval of safe, simple, interferon-free HCV therapies with cure rates >95%. Although people who inject drugs account for the majority of new and existing cases of HCV, reinfection following treatment can occur. The goal of this Project Grant is to examine HCV treatment and reinfection following successful therapy among people who inject drugs ....     An International Whole Genome Study To Definitively Map Heritable Risk In Sarcomas

    We want to understand why some people get sarcomas, and others do not. This is likely due to genetic causes, because these cancers affect the young. We now have the tools to address this question, and have created the largest and best characterised study of sarcoma families in the world upon which to apply these tools.     Circulating Tumour DNA To Monitor Treatment Response And Resistance In Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia

    Many cancers shed small amounts of DNA (ctDNA) into the patient’s bloodstream and recent advances in genomic technologies now allow levels of ctDNA to be accurately measured in the blood. Changes in ctDNA levels have potential to be used as specific markers of disease progression and/or response to cancer therapy. This project will evaluate if ctDNA can be used to monitor treatment responses and individualise treatment decisions in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

    A CTCF Code For The 3D Cancer Genome Architecture

    CTCF is a unique architectural protein that regulates the three-dimensional (3D) folding of the genome to switch our genes on, or off. This is important, as it affects how DNA is arranged inside the cells, which is turn assures correct gene expression patterns. Here, we will define the role of CTCF in organizing the 3D genome architecture and identify genetic and epigenetic states that control its function.
