Congestion control of networks: a unified stochastic framework. Systems such as the internet, wireless networks and the power grid require efficient allocation of shared resources. This research will develop ways to reduce delays in the internet and allow for growth in the power grid, without requiring additional infrastructure.

Test bed for wide-area software defined networking research: This project aims to develop a wide-area test bed, spanning ten organisations, for conducting research and experimentation in the emerging disruptive technology of Software Defined Networking (SDN). SDN is likely to bring long-term transformation to the networking industry, much like cloud computing did, by enabling dynamic virtualised elastic network services under software control. The test bed will empower Australian researchers in network technologies and dependent applications (for example, multimedia and security) to collaboratively develop and demonstrate novel ideas at scale. This is expected to benefit Australia by giving our researchers international recognition in this nascent area, and developing a national talent pool for local industry.Read moreRead less
Decimetre-level indoor positioning on Wi-Fi. This project aims to exploit both spatial and frequency diversities based on the multiple-input, multiple-out and frequency hopping techniques to achieve the goal of decimetre-level position accuracy by significantly increasing Wi-Fi bandwidth. Wi-Fi positioning is utilised in locations where GPS is blocked, typically this is within a structure. The project will design a set of mechanisms to facilitate Wi-Fi positioning, discover key principles to guide practical design, and develop advanced algorithms to push the performance limit to decimetre-level accuracy. The project will develop key fundamental technologies which are expected to promote innovative, practical, and cost-effective applications to local industry and service sectors and contribute to Australia's long-term economic growth.Read moreRead less
Application of the principle of least action to optimise the energy efficiency of content delivery networks. Service delivery via the internet is a significant and growing part of most developed economies. Delivery by the internet is powered by electricity with a resultant carbon footprint. Without action this continued growth is unsustainable. This project will provide network design tools and techniques to enable sustained growth of internet services.
Efficient and fair context-aware resource allocation in networks. This project aims to develop a flexible mathematical framework for internet resource allocation among competing demands by exploiting application context to allocate resources more efficiently. The project will extend an existing framework which allocates resources independently at each time period, by considering benefits over periods of time relevant to users. The expected outcome of this project is a systematic method for desig ....Efficient and fair context-aware resource allocation in networks. This project aims to develop a flexible mathematical framework for internet resource allocation among competing demands by exploiting application context to allocate resources more efficiently. The project will extend an existing framework which allocates resources independently at each time period, by considering benefits over periods of time relevant to users. The expected outcome of this project is a systematic method for designing next-generation congestion-avoidance protocols that anticipate and accommodate different types of demand. This project will provide significant benefits including better provision of internet services and new ways to help combat traffic congestion, bringing benefits to both the environment and society.Read moreRead less
Modelling Energy Efficiency of Next-Generation Networks. The focus of this project is to develop modelling techniques for energy consumption in next-generation telecommunication networks. A growing problem for telecommunication providers is how to minimise the energy consumption of their networks. This is important in reducing their operational expenditure and meeting the energy demands of future growth in network traffic. The focus of this project is to develop modelling techniques for energy consumption in next-generation telecommunication networks. A growing problem for telecommunication providers is how to minimise the energy consumption of their networks. This is important in reducing their operational expenditure and meeting the energy demands of future growth in network traffic. There is an emerging trend towards next-generation networks (such as 5G wireless and network function virtualisation), which will use highly dynamic network architectures. Project outcomes are intended to enable real-time management of energy usage, and the assessment of the financial benefits of different investment strategies in network infrastructure.Read moreRead less
Precision timekeeping infrastructure: bridging the hardware/software divide. Accurate time is essential for critical services from telecommunications to banking, and increasingly, must be performed with software clocks within computers, using hardware clocks accessed over the Internet. This project will bridge the hardware/software divide to deliver reliable and cost effective access to precise timing.
Cost-effective App Service Management in Edge Computing Environment. This project aims to deliver a framework and a suite of approaches for cost-effective app service management in the edge computing (EC) environment facilitated by the 5G mobile network. Edge computing offers great promises for rapidly advancing mobile and IoT apps in many active domains in Australia, e.g., self-driving cars, medical services, etc. Using a variety of optimization techniques and game theory, this project attacks ....Cost-effective App Service Management in Edge Computing Environment. Edge computing offers great promises for rapidly advancing mobile and IoT apps in many active domains in Australia, e.g., self-driving cars, medical services, etc. Using a variety of optimization techniques and game theory, this project attacks the new challenges in the deployment, delivery and adaptation of app services in the EC environment. The outcomes of this project will significantly promote new mobile and IoT apps over Australia's 5G mobile network by allowing app vendors to manage their services cost-effectively with ease in the EC environment.Read moreRead less

Computer intrusion is a major concern in many places. It is estimated that cybercrime cost firms US$1 trillion globally in 2008. Many serious cyber attacks, including cyber espionage, do not generate significant network traffic and can easily penetrate network-based intrusion detection systems (NIDS). Such attacks often attempt to compromise individual hosts and hence they are best detected at the host level. We aim to design innovative host-based IDS, as a complement to the NIDS, to address this issue. The outcomes of this project will strengthen the national capability to resist attacks by criminals and terrorists on Australian networked critical infrastructures and also enhance the global competitiveness of Australia’s information technology industry.Read moreRead less
Detecting Supervisory Control and Data Access (SCADA) malicious programs to protect Australian critical infrastructure. The security of SCADA systems has enormous impact to our national security and economy because they control and monitor critical infrastructure, like power, gas and water facilities and nuclear power plants, etc. This project aims to investigate the security issues and provide innovative technological solutions to detect and prevent such problems.
