Social sustainability of emerging environmentally sensitive industries: a case study of oyster aquaculture on the South Australian Eyre Peninsula. The Eyre Peninsula oyster aquaculture industry has grown rapidly over the last 15 years and an assessment of the factors affecting its long-term sustainability is urgently required. The project will consider aquaculture in relation to social, natural and economic systems, extending the Capitals Framework of assessing rural sustainability developed by the Association of Social Science in Australia. The study combines quantitative and qualitative data in order to assess changes in the stocks of community capital as oyster aquaculture develops. A key aim of the research is to inform the development of policies and governance structures in Australian aquaculture management.

A model to investigate the relationships between social capital, social inclusion and industrial development. This study will develop a new model for investigating the relationships between social capital, social inclusion and industry development in a designated area under the Commonwealth Government Initiative in Regional Australia. The project will address whether high levels of social capital reduce social exclusion and the likely impacts of the ?dark side? of social capital upon communities. The study will draw on relevant contemporary theory, survey analysis, interviews and discussion forums to develop new explanations that will help build community capacities and inform the development of social policy, employment and industrial development.

A prime challenge facing management today is how an organisation can foster a supportive culture for innovation. The purpose of this study is to apply and verify the effectiveness of existing innovation models to the manufacturing industry, culminating in a new model and set of metrics to guide the development of individual and enterprise innovation competencies. The innovation competencies will be validated through a combination of project and problem-based action learning methodologies. The project deliverables will be a range of tools, techniques and other resources to assist enterprises to become innovation ready.

Evaluation of a Fatigue Risk Management System in the Australian aviation industry. The proposed project will develop and validate tools and guidance materials for design and implementation fatigue risk management systems [FRMSs]. Upon completion of the project, these tools will be made freely available to CASA and the Australian aviation industry. This will assist CASA in providing an efficient FRMS implementation strategy that has been scientifically validated. Furthermore, it will improve .... Furthermore, it will improve safety and minimise the cost of FRMS design and implementation to the aviation industry, which has recently undergone significant financial burden. Ultimately, this will improve safety for the flying public.

Determining the effects of fatigue on pilots' performance in a simulated flight environment. Increasingly, pilots are required to work more flexible flight schedules that expose them to greater levels of work-related fatigue. Consequently, a recent federal parliamentary inquiry recommended that a fatigue risk management approach be applied to the regulation of pilots? flight and duty times. A key aspect of such an approach, and the aim of the proposed project, is to determine the level of fatigue at which pilots? ability to operate an aircraft reaches a safety-critical level. This research will provide a scientifically validated benchmark for regulating pilots? flight and duty times. Ultimately, this will improve safety for the flying public.
