The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites you to participate in a short survey about your
interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services. The survey will take
approximately 5 minutes and is anonymous. It’s open to anyone who uses our digital research infrastructure
services including Reasearch Link Australia.
We will use the information you provide to improve the national research infrastructure and services we
deliver and to report on user satisfaction to the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research
Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program.
Please take a few minutes to provide your input. The survey closes COB Friday 29 May 2026.

A New Economic History of Australia. Australia is at a cross-roads. After almost a century of protectionism we have globally re-integrated and liberalised, as we were when we possessed the world's highest standard of living in the nineteenth century. But we have yet to truly rebuild our capability to compete well in a global knowledge economy and to do so sustainably and justly. After almost a century of protectionism we have globally re-integrated and liberalised, as we were when we possessed the world's highest standard of living in the nineteenth century. But we have yet to truly rebuild our capability to compete well in a global knowledge economy and to do so sustainably and justly. It is the presumption of this Project that a new understanding of the role of human investment in our history can help underpin a clearer understanding of the policy imperatives for our future. The Project will lead to an explicit and detailed policy agenda for re-shaping Australia's future so as to be again a clever country.Read moreRead less
Nonlinear Econometric Modelling: A Complex Systems Perspective. It is becoming increasingly accepted that economic systems are both complex and adaptive. It is becoming increasingly accepted that economic systems are both complex and adaptive. However, this introduces a range of problems in constructing, estimating and testing economic models using time series data. In this project, this problem will be addressed through the formulation and implementation of a new methodology and associated techniques. These techniques will allow a researcher to use information obtained from a set of nonlinearity tests to determine which type of nonlinear model provides the best representation of a data generating mechanism. Selected high frequency financial and macroeconomic data (for the US and Australia) will be used in the study. This research is intended to change the direction and emphasis of econometric modelling and promises to have a fundamental impact on forecasting and policy evaluation methods.

This research will examine the proposition that small business policy systems affect the structure and strategy of SMEs and in turn the sectors within which SMEs innovate and specialise. It will involve an analysis of SME policy systems; sectors of SME specialisation based on patent data, annual reports and firm web sites; and a longitudinal study of the strategy and structure of 29 case study firms in 3 sectors in 3 countries based on in-depth interviews and focus groups. Findings will provide a basis for improved policy advice concerning the mechanisms for encouraging small firm innovation and competitiveness in critical sectors.Read moreRead less
Research Training, Scientists, Mobility and Innovation: enhancing comparative methodologies. The collaboration will facilitate transfer of research value mapping (RVM) methods and technologies from a leading US centre into Australia. The collaboration will facilitate transfer of research value mapping (RVM) methods and technologies from a leading US centre into Australia. The RVM program focus on university-business collaboration will orient future collaborative projects and analyses. This will enhance the state-of-the-art of research evaluation in Australia over time. Extension of the CIs unique survey database will incorporate comparative dimensions into research value mapping. A focus on Australian respondents in the international database (n=1300) will lead to analyses that inform science policy and scientist human resource development in Australia. This will provide a deeper understanding of Australia’s science role in the Asia Pacific region.Read moreRead less
A comparative study of knowledge transfer systems and their contribution to knowledge transfer and diffusion, innovation and socioeconomic transformation. This project will contribute to the national priority goal of promoting an innovation culture and economy by providing knowledge with which to improve institutional arrangements for research commercialisation for the purpose of enhancing business innovation and ensuring that publicly fund research results in commercial and social benefits. This project will contribute to the national priority goal of promoting an innovation culture and economy by providing knowledge with which to improve institutional arrangements for research commercialisation for the purpose of enhancing business innovation and ensuring that publicly fund research results in commercial and social benefits. The research is of particular benefit to regional and rural communities because it adopts a novel system level design which explores the role of KTSs in socioeconomic transformation and across sectors and regions. It therefore moves beyond prior studies which have focused on high technology sectors and regions.Read moreRead less

Research Scientists in the Australian National System of Innovation. The project examines the backgrounds, careers and technology transfer activities of research scientists working in Australia. The project is significant because these scientists are the key innovation agents of the Australian National System of Innovation. Increasingly anxious about successful transition to a knowledge economy, governments are focusing on R&D but paying too little attention to Australia's core innovation personnel. The project focuses attention onto scientists and the innovation tracks they and their work make across the economy, in both public and private sectors, with the aim of improving polices for their retention and full participation in Australian knowledge-based development.Read moreRead less
Capturing value on the margins of the global knowledge economy. This project will explain the basis of competitiveness in knowledge economy industries. This project will explain the basis of competitiveness in knowledge economy industries. It is widely understood that high levels of participation in knowledge intensive activities contribute to economic growth and higher wages. There is a need to develop policies to promote Australia's performance in knowledge intensive industries. As such this project addresses a policy problem by analysing the basis of competitiveness in the medical instruments and video production industries as exemplar knowledge intensive industries. The findings will provide a basis for formulating new policy support for the knowledge economy which draws on the most recent theoretical insights derived from global production network research.Read moreRead less
Boundary making and strategy making in knowledge-forming organisations. Government policy is devoted to bettering linkages between university research and commercial product development in the knowledge economy. Government policy is devoted to bettering linkages between university research and commercial product development in the knowledge economy. Yet little is known of relationships between university and non-university knowledge forming organisations (KFOs) and what policies and resources sustain and adjust the border between them. Different countries approach these issues in distinctive ways, in part because of public policy, in part through different endogenous dynamics. Using case study research in five countries, the project will identify ways the division of labour between different KFOs can be optimised, while sustaining their respective strengths, and maximising the opportunities for strategy and innovation.Read moreRead less
Network dynamics and field evolution: hubs, clusters and interorganisational ties in biotechnology. The study will support a robust biotechnology industry in Australia, which delivers economy-wide benefits and provides employment for local life scientists. Although Australia has a long history of innovation and achievement in the life sciences, commercial benefits in the field have often been harvested elsewhere. Australian governments are making substantial investments in biotechnology, including education and training, directed towards developing the local industry. The proposed study will make these investments more informed, facilitating fine-grained development of public policy and industry strategy.Read moreRead less

This project will produce a comprehensive, integrated analysis of Australia's national innovation system. Through a combination of recent theoretical and conceptual insights and robust empirical analysis the partners will address one of the most pressing issues confronting Australian industrial and research policy. The project will analyze the changes occurring in Australia's innovation system and the drivers behind them. It will examine the inter-relationships in the development of the innovation system and particular important industrial clusters within it. It will study the impact of globalization, and will compare Australia's innovation system and performance with that of Finland and Canada.Read moreRead less
