Antibody producing cells and memory B cells are crucial to successful vaccination and provide protection against infections. Summary
Antibody found in cervicovaginal secretions is predominantly of the IgG subclass. In the acidic environment of the female reproductive tract IgG antibodies against surface antigens on Chlamydia may actually enhance rather than prevent infection, due to uptake of IgG-coated bacteria by the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn), which is found on the surface of epithelial cells in the reproductive tract. The proposed studies will determine the effects of chlamydial antibodies on the course of infection.

Monoclonal antibodies are widely used in diagnosis and therapy due to their outstanding specificity and safety. The monoclonal antibodies recognizing cytokines with enhancing functions are an emerging class of novel reagents in immunotherapy. This project is to investigate how a newly indentified monoclonal antibody enhances the activity of a cytokine and use this immunostimulatory function to design new strategies for better vaccination and treatment for cancer and infection.
