Summary
As Australia’s population ages, our public health system faces the challenge of an increase in chronic conditions. Many of these can be prevented or better managed by regular physical activity. New public health recommendations have evolved to strongly encourage all adults to engage in physical activity as an integral part of their “lifestyle”. My research will expand the evidence for endorsing the benefits of this “lifestyle” approach for the physical and cognitive functions of older people.
Bimolecular chemistry at very low temperatures. Many chemical reactions involve short-lived and highly reactive intermediates that cannot be observed under ordinary reaction conditions. Hence, much of this chemistry is shrouded in mystery. This project aims to develop the ability to observe and monitor such reactions directly using a combination of spectroscopies at very low temperatures, where the molecules are more stable and reactions slower. New mechanisms and methods in carbene and nitrene chemistry. Carbenes and nitrenes are highly reactive intermediates of theoretical and mechanistic significance and synthetic versatility in organic chemistry. In spite of high reactivity, selective and high-yielding reactions can be performed, leading to products that may be difficult or impossible to synthesise by other methods. The proposed program of research consists of (i) conducting a new trial to examine feasible and relatively low-cost physical activity promotion programs for adults with pre-diabetes; (ii) completing a series of existing major-funded studies relating to health promotion and education programs to promote physical activity; and (iii) I will serve as the Director for the University of Newcastle’s recently-funded Priority Research Centre in Physical Activity and Nutrition.
Educating for healthy citizens: the health work of teachers in Australian schools. Teachers promote students health every day in many ways, such as performing periodic health checks, teaching health education lessons, or leading pastoral care. This project looks at what, and how much, health work teachers undertake and how prepared they are to do this work.

The 6dF Galaxy Survey - Mass and Motions in the Nearby Universe. The 6dF Galaxy Survey will yield by far the largest and most detailed map of the positions and motions of galaxies in the nearby universe. The goal of the survey is to determine the distributions of both the galaxies and the dark matter in order to measure fundamental cosmological parameters and constrain models of galaxy formation. The survey will cover the whole southern hemisphere, measuring redshifts for 120,000 galaxies and di ....The 6dF Galaxy Survey - Mass and Motions in the Nearby Universe. A cluster randomised controlled trial of a school-based physical activity intervention in at-risk communities. This project will test the effect of a professional development program targeting physical education teachers, designed to increase students' opportunities to do physical activity during physical education lessons. It will focus on how to enhance their motivation to not only be physically active during physical education lessons, but also outside school hours.
