Drawing upon approaches within politics and cultural studies, this project expects to map the history of thinking about anti-racism in Australia, evaluate the impact of anti-racist work within Australian society, and theorise the effect of anti-racist efforts on liberal democratic institutions and ideology. The project's benefits include the identification of best practices in anti-racist policies and approaches. This would make a significant contribution to Australia’s social cohesion and the combatting of racial discrimination, both of which relate to official Australian government policy objectives.

This project will produce the first comprehensive ethnography of Malaysia's refugee and asylum seeker population. This diverse population is of key strategic significance to Australia's migration policy. Many of the refugees and asylum seekers living in Malaysia are in transit, awaiting permanent resettlement to a Western country. Understanding the everyday lives of such refugees is crucial to the development of evidence-based policy necessary to deal with the region's growing refugee crisis. This project will advance the anthropology of multiculturalism and refugees as well as producing a rich body of work detailing the largely undocumented lives of refugees in Malaysia.

Assessing the Australian Football League's (AFL) racial and religious vilification laws to promote community harmony, multiculturalism and reconciliation. This interdisciplinary project analyses the effectiveness of AFL corporate policy on racial and religious vilification with a view to providing recommendations for further policy actions. A better understanding of how ethnic harmony, diversity and toleration can be achieved will help strengthen the social fabric of the Australian community. As the AFL is one of the largest corporate employers of Indigenous and multicultural Australians, the lessons learned from the operation of its policies and education programs will have important implications for a wide range of Australians across many sectors. Benefits will include recommendations to develop policy frameworks, cross-cultural training and community capacity building.
