Summary
My vision is to build the world’s leading dedicated translational research program for the prevention and treatment of comorbid mental health and substance abuse. While it is widely recognised that there is significant comorbidity in these two areas they have traditionally been approached in isolation, making it virtually impossible to make significant inroads. I seek to increase our understanding, prevent these where possible and improve treatment responses.
A/Prof Thomas' Senior Research Fellowship will provide support for the continued development of a broad-based, national and international research program focused on the biology and clinical aspects of connective tissue tumours. A/Prof Thomas' career goals are to continue work in basic, translational and clinical research into these tumours which include osteosarcoma, liposarcoma, giant cell tumour of bone and the inherited risk of development of these neoplasms.

Mental ill-health, substance use and chronic physical illness go hand in hand, yet treatment for all three health issues is rarely delivered. Amanda Baker is leading a team trialling psychological interventions for these co-existing health issues suitable for delivery in mental health, substance use and medical settings. Translating Gene Discovery For Key Diseases Into Clinical Outcomes

The goal of the fellowship is capitalize on successful gene mapping studies for endometriosis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), melanoma and other complex diseases and conduct functional studies, cross-disease analyses, and genetic studies of response to treatment. These studies will identify specific genes responsible for increased disease risk to understand the biology of these diseases, their relationship with other diseases, and help improve disease management and clinical outcomes.
I am a speech pathologist working with patients who have suffered a traumatic brain injury or stroke. Brain injury is the leading cause of disability in young Australians with devastating life consequences. A common problem is communication difficulties, which leads to relationship breakdowns, unemployability, and social isolation. This Fellowship will deliver innovative communication treatments to improve the social outcomes of people with brain injury, their families and the community.
