This project aims to advance knowledge of the synthesis, structures and reactivity of highly reactive rare earth metal-organic compounds. The project expects to build the knowledge and skills to underpin many developments of Australia's still under utilized rare earth resources to diversify from Chinese domination. The anticipated outcomes will be new synthetic and reaction chemistry including a demonstration of how size and electronic factors can be used to modify and advance rare earth chemistry. This project should provide significant benefit such as are a better knowledge base in rare earth chemistry to underpin future applications in chemical manufacturing, new materials, catalysis and recycling.

Representation theory in exactly solvable systems. This project aims to develop the representation theory of Lie and generalised Lie algebras related to exactly solvable models. The project will exploit several innovative ideas on the structure of quadratic algebras, Casimir invariants, differential operator realisations, roots systems, characters and indecomposable representations. This will give fundamental mathematical insight and allow the construction of new, exactly solvable models. This w .... This will have an impact on theoretical physics as exactly solvable models play a central role in our understanding of a plethora of physical phenomena.

The project aims to resolve important and longstanding open problems in Geometric Group Theory and Theoretical Computer Science. Since the 1980s researchers have conjectured that the geometric property of being geodetic is equivalent to several purely algebraic, algorithmic, and language-theoretic characterisations. The project team's expertise in geodesic properties of groups, the interaction between formal languages and groups, and the theory of rewriting systems, together with recent breakthroughs by the team ensures that significant results can be expected. Benefits include training research students and postdoctoral researchers in cutting-edge techniques, and advancing fundamental knowledge in mathematics and computer science.

A top-down approach to synthesising high-value fluorocarbons. Fluorocarbons' ability to impart high stability, solubility, and unique reactivity to host molecules renders them invaluable in agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, polymers and surfactants. Their robustness also renders them environmentally persistent. There are no industrially utilised methods for the re-purposing or recycling of fluorocarbons. This project aims to generate new methods for the selective activation of carbon-fluorine bonds in polyfluorocarbons, allowing their incorporation or repurposing into high value chemicals and/or easy derivitisation to access a plethora of new fluorocarbon products. Expected outcomes will allow new processing methods to value add to fluorocarbons while preventing their environmental release.

ARC Training Centre for Integrated Operations for Complex Resources. This Training Centre aims to increase value in mining through clever applications of ‘lean processing’ and train the next generation of scientists and engineers in advanced sensors and data analytics in complex resources; knowledge priorities for the mining industry. Sensor information will be linked to the resource’s in-place knowledge to enable data analytics of all embedded knowledge. Processing can then be tuned to resource attributes, maximising value ‘on the fly’. Benefits will include increasing certainty on product quality and maximising throughput and recovery. Outcomes will include new tools to rapidly model geological and geometallurgical uncertainty with sensor inputs, to track the resource to product and enhance interpretation.
