The research aims at improving the existing and creating new automated face detection and recognition methods by making them invariant, firstly to head pose, orientation, scale and rotation, and then to occlusion, lighting conditions and facial expressions.
A robust face detector will be developed first and then a new face recognition algorithm that continues to learn identity-specific discriminants on-line by collecting incremental face exemplars. The result of the research will be an algorithm that can improve its performance on-line adapting in a stable learning process each identity model to the correct facial examples.
The research has significant practical implication in visual surveillance increasing the robustness of identification of person identity, state and intent.

Strategically, our pioneering solutions besides being technically and socially significant, open fresh options for sensor-agnostic data analysis. The technical significance lies through the creation of new technologies for the critical national and global security markets, currently overwhelmed by data. The social significance arises from our solutions being privacy preserving, providing new avenues for the production of novel, socially acceptable products for aged care monitoring. Our methods spearhead future advancement in diverse disciplines due to the wide applicability of the methods to other sensor networks (Square Kilometre Array) and data types, providing new frameworks for addressing crucial problems of data management. Computational infrastructure for machine learning in computer vision. The many trillions of images stored on computers around the world, including more than 100 billion on Facebook alone, represent exactly the information needed to develop artificial vision. All we need do is extract it. This project will develop the computational infrastructure required to allow Australian researchers to achieve this goal.

The computational infrastructure for developing deep machine learning models aims to enable new developments in machine learning of deep neural network models by providing the specialised computing necessary to train and evaluate the networks. In the last three years, deep networks have smashed previous performance ceilings for tasks such as object recognition in images, speech recognition and automatic translation, bringing the prospect of machine intelligence closer than ever. Modern machine learning techniques have had huge impact in the last decade in fields such as robotics, computer vision and data analytics. The facility would enable Australian researchers to develop, learn and apply deep networks to problems of national importance in robotic vision and big data analytics. Read moreRead less

Age verification is important for many security applications including passport control for border security, and protecting children from adult websites, venues, or products. Accurate, reliable and practical age estimation or verification technologies would be of enormous benefit for 'Safeguarding Australia'. The ability of a machine to estimate a person's age and provide an age-appropriate interface also has benefits for the young and old in our society. The outcome of this project, practical technologies for automatic human age estimation based on visual information, will dramatically change the current (non-technology based) methods of age verification and create new opportunities for customised human-machine interfaces. This project aims to determine how pattern recognition can be harnessed to accelerate and expand the capability of experimental optimisation that underpins scientific innovation. Disrupting current experimental methods, this new framework will use data-driven models to guide humans through experimental complexity. The expected outcomes of the project include advancing the theory and practice of pattern recognition in Bayesian optimisation by solving both fundamental and translatory problems, totally transforming the way complex experimental explorations can be done.
