Foot pain affects one in four older Australians and leads to difficulty walking, loss of independence and reduced quality of life. The research outlined in this application will address this common but largely ignored health problem by improving our knowledge of the causes of foot pain, developing novel treatments for foot disorders incorporating specialised exercises, footwear and insoles, and testing the effectiveness of these interventions in clinical trials.
I am a physiologist-pharmacologist examining fundamental mechanisms of chronic inflammatory disease. This application for a Senior Principal Research Fellowship is to enable me to address the enormous burden of musculoskeletal conditions - an important, but understudied and underfunded area of health/medical research. My focus is the most costly and prevalent musculoskeletal conditions of low back pain and osteoarthritis, and other neuromuscular conditions such as incontinence. My aim is to improve outcomes by discovering how to apply the right treatment to the right person at the right time.
Chronic pain is a significant global health, economic and social problem, with the annual economic burden estimated at approximately $40 billion in Australia. My research will focus on the discovery and structure-function of venom peptides (trivially called toxins) from cone snails and spiders plus other Australian venomous creatures that modulate sodium and calcium channels in peripheral pain and associated pathways and optimise these for clinical development.
