Centre Of Research Excellence In Eradicating Food Allergy: Prevention, Cure And Reducing Adverse Events

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $2,496,041.00
    Summary
Australia has the highest reported rate of food allergy in the world. We aim to eradicate food allergy through improved prevention and cure, supported by evidence generated by our collaborative network of research. In addition, we aim to help prevent children with food allergy having anaphylaxis through improved public health policy and clinical pathways. As a second wave of the allergy epidemic, we are well positioned to turn back the tide of this newly emergent health threat to the public.

Mechanisms Of Glucocorticoid Resistance In Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $547,970.00
    Summary
Glucocorticoids are extremely active drugs used in the treatment of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), yet a proportion of patients respond poorly to therapy and exhibit resistance at relapse. Clinically relevant mechanisms of glucocorticoid resistance are poorly understood, principally due to lack of appropriate experimental models. This project will reveal novel mechanisms of drug resistance in childhood leukaemia and lead to novel therapeutic strategies to improve outcome.

Mechanisms Of Induction And Progression Of Childhood Asthma: Investigations In A Mouse Model

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $517,586.00
    Summary
This project investigates how certain respiratory viral infections in very young children might predispose to developing asthma, and how inflammation in the airways in asthma might then worsen. The experimental work, which will use unique mouse models developed in the laboratories of the chief investigators, will focus on changes in genes that control the pattern of immune response to allergens and that regulate the progression of inflammation.

Epimutations As Germ-line Defects In Hereditary Cancer Syndromes

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $385,925.00
    Summary
Traditionally familial cancers were thought to be caused and inherited by spelling mistakes within the genetic code of cancer prevention genes. Our group has found that a 'chemical coat' around the MLH1 gene, causing it to be switched off, can also be inherited in some cases of bowel cancer, without any mistakes within the gene's code. We will determine if this 'coat' causes other types of cancer and if this runs in families. We also hope to find out how the coat is formed and may be reversed.

SEX HORMONES AND SOCIAL INTERACTION DEFICITS

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $503,694.00
    Summary
Prevalence report by the Australian Advisory Board on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) estimated that 1 child in every 160 children in the 6-12 year-old age group is affected by ASD. There is no cure for ASD and the causes are not understood. We propose that sex hormones may play a role in the development of these disorders. We will test this hypothesis using knockout and transgenic mouse models which have social interaction deficits and brain structure reminiscent of these disorders.

The Australian Centre For Research Excellence In Offender Health

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $2,646,826.00
    Summary
Offenders are one of the most marginalised groups in society and endure the worst health outcomes in regards to mental health, exposure to bloodborne viruses and sexually transmissible infections, and engagement in health risk behaviours. Incarceration devastates Indigenous communities and we urgently need for solutions to reduce Aboriginal prisoner numbers. The research proposed by this CRE in mental health and infectious diseases will improve health outcomes for offenders and provide treatment ....
