Centre For Research Excellence In Reducing Healthcare Associated Infection
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$2,495,795.00
Summary
Each year in Australia 180,000 patients suffer a healthcare associated infection. Risk can be reduced with relatively simple technology but substantial costs arise with system wide adoption and monitoring. The economic paradigm is that funds can be invested for infection reduction to save costs and lives. The CRE will reveal the cost-effectiveness of infection control programmes and show health services decision-makers how to improve patient outcomes, save resources and save lives.
"Smart Food" - The fulcrum in the energy balance equation. The overall aim of the project is to establish how nutrients best promote an increase in energy expenditure and therefore weight loss. The experiments will be performed in rats using sophisticated technologies to introduce specific combinations of fats, carbohydrates or proteins directly into the stomach and then measure energy expenditure in a specialised type of energy burning rather than energy storing fat called brown adipose tissue. ...."Smart Food" - The fulcrum in the energy balance equation. These experiments will uncover the mechanisms that relate nutrients in the stomach and activation of brown adipose tissue. They will provide a framework on which this project can build a knowledge of smart diets that will allow the effective control of body weight through modulation of energy expenditure. Adaptive and Integrated Resource Allocation. By leveraging progress in communication technologies, adaptive and integrated optimization systems will open innovative application areas critical to Australia, yet outside the scope of existing optimization technology. For instance, they will dispatch and reallocate ambulances in real time, help contain pandemics, allocate resources dynamically to extinguish bushfires, and assist in failure recovery of energy infrastrutures. These systems will also solve existing logistics and manufacturing applications better, making these industries more effective and reactive. The project also aims at establishing a center of excellence in optimization in Melbourne with an international reputation in research, teaching, and industrial collaboration.Read moreRead less

This project adopts novel statistical modelling and machine learning approaches to understand the development of lifestyle behaviours in early childhood. Despite the pivotal role of lifestyle behaviours in influencing health and quality of life, little research exists on lifestyle behaviours in early childhood. This project will establish a comprehensive understanding of lifestyle behaviours in early childhood by identifying key developmental time points, mechanisms of behavioural change, and children at risk of developing poor lifestyle behaviours. The project will inform strategies and policies to optimise lifestyle behaviours from the start of life and showcase the capabilities of novel methods in advancing behavioural epidemiology.Read moreRead less
Impact and Effectiveness of Personal Ventilation in Open Plan Offices: a study of the Task Air system. Centralised air-conditioning systems are the standard for commercial office buildings in Australia. These systems are energy intensive, typically accounting for around 50% of building energy use. Centralised air-conditioning systems are the standard for commercial office buildings in Australia. These systems are energy intensive, typically accounting for around 50% of building energy use. However, lack of occupant control over set temperatures or air movement tends to reduce thermal comfort, which can adversely affect worker productivity. The benefit of this project is that it will quantify the improvements to occupant comfort and energy savings possible with a PV system. This study will enable PV systems to be evaluated as an alternative to traditional air-conditioning, thereby demonstrating their effectiveness as a means of improving the sustainability rating of commercial office buildings in Australia.Read moreRead less
Optimising Exercise and Nutrition Throughout the Life Cycle. During the past decade the proportion of Australia's population aged 65 years and over has increased to 13% (2.7 million). During the same period, the proportion of the population aged 85 years and over has more than doubled and is now the fastest growing subpopulation in Australia. As the number of elderly persons continues to grow, sarcopenia-related conditions will have a dramatic and inevitable impact on the lives of all Australian ....Optimising Exercise and Nutrition Throughout the Life Cycle. During the same period, the proportion of the population aged 85 years and over has more than doubled and is now the fastest growing subpopulation in Australia. As the number of elderly persons continues to grow, sarcopenia-related conditions will have a dramatic and inevitable impact on the lives of all Australians. The novel dietary protocols developed from the results of the studies undertaken in this proposal will translate into better treatment options for reversing age-dependent muscle degeneration. This is a critical first step for improving the standard of living for a large portion of Australian society.Read moreRead less

The successful implementation of business analytics systems will enhance the ability of Australian organisations to operate and compete efficiently and effectively within Australia and globally. By understanding the capabilities that lead to improved firm performance and their relationship to strategy, organisations can use the theoretical model to plan for business analytics systems implementation. The model is an original contribution in an important area of information systems research and will enhance Australia's reputation as a leader in the area of organizational use of information systems.Read moreRead less
Developmental programming of adult stress responses: early life nutrition permanently alters stress and immune function. Obese children are more likely to grow up to be obese adults than normal-weight children are. Their early life diet may be at least partly to blame. Early life nutrition can also compromise ability to respond to stress or inflammation. This project will investigate how this occurs and if these effects are specific to the developmental period.
A Marine Cadastre for Australia - Addressing Key Scientific and Policy Issues. A marine cadastre provides a means for delineating, managing and administering legally definable offshore boundaries. Marine cadastre research was initiated in Australia under a previous ARC grant which aimed at defining issues affecting the development of an Australian marine cadastre. The current project focuses on four such issues :
(1) Resolving ambiguities in the definition of the tidal interface

This project aims to identify approaches to enable firms to find and introduce ideas through open innovation. Open innovation, with its focus on external sources of ideas, is a promising approach for increasing organisational innovation. While uptake of open innovation is on the increase, the lack of understanding of practices and technologies used to successfully introduce it into firms, limits its usefulness and results in wasted resources. This project aims to investigate open innovation and relevant technologies to identify success factors for the idea generation and assessment phases of open innovation, develop guidelines for their application, identify effective technologies and related recommendations for use, and quantify their impact on innovation.Read moreRead less
