Some of the frailest members of our community live in nursing homes and a hip fracture can be devastating to a person with dementia as it can leave them permanently unable to walk. We don't know how best to promote recovery when they break their hips. At present there is an assumption that rehabilitation at this stage of life is not worthwhile but this study will test whether the benefits outweigh the costs. Summary
The aim of this study is to assess the safety, tolerability, weight-loss efficacy, change in lean body mass and impact of cognition of three approaches to treat obesity in the elderly. We will compare dietary advice, an energy reduced diet and a very low calorie diet. All three groups will also have an exercise program. This study will be of major assistance in developing management guidelines for obesity in the elderly, which will likely be an emerging public health issue.

Summary
Sixty-thousand Australians die every year in residential aged care facilities but the quality of their end-of-life care varies. The IMPART program aims to improve palliative care in residential aged care using telehealth. We provide training and palliative-geriatric support to aged care staff and general practitioners to enable timely end-of-life discussions, improve documentation of care preferences, reduce avoidable hospitalisation and improve residents' quality of care at the end of life.
BAN-Dep: A Trial To Decrease The Prevalence Of Depression In Australian Nursing Homes

Summary
Depression is common among residents of aged care facilities, although symptoms are often not detected or treated. The Professional Education to Aged Care (PEAC) is a beyondblue e-learning platform designed to enhance knowledge about depression and anxiety in residential care. This trial aims to test whether the addition of a behavioural activation component is more efficacious than the PEAC alone in reducing the frequency of depressive symptoms among nursing home residents.
Antipsychotic medications are commonly used in managing behavioral symptoms, among nursing home residents with dementia. However, these medications only have modest effect, and can increase the risk of stroke and death. Unfortunately the use of antipsychotics in nursing homes has continued to rise in Australia. This Fellowship focuses on a subgroup of people with dementia, due to Huntington Disease. While the cognitive, functional and behavioural changes in people with dementia are without doubt stressful for family carers, it may be that the loss of the relationship underlies the burden and feelings of depression that many carers experience. Typically, interventions to alleviate carer stress separate the carer from their relative instead of focusing on improving their relationship. This project aims to train carers to conduct personalised one-to-one activities with their relative.
