Fostered by continuous technology advances, a vision of the Industrial Internet is emerging, in which equipment, machines, and industrial robots are interconnected to each other and to the cloud, allowing remote control of industrial processes and critical infrastructure, to intelligently optimise their behaviour with minimal human intervention. Moving from the state-of-the-art small pilot projects to a global Industrial Internet requires wireless systems with consistent high reliability, low latency and massive connectivity. In this project we will develop new communication-theoretic principles and technologies for wireless networks meeting the demands of critical industrial and infrastructure applications in the Industrial Internet era.

    Summary
Cementitious gel: the missing link in understanding the ageing of built infrastructure. Exposure of built reinforced concrete infrastructure to coastal environments causes premature ageing, unplanned remediation and reduced safety. Enhanced forecasting, achieved by advanced methods, including Helium Ion Microscopy and modeling interactions between cement gel, chloride and water, will deliver proactive management of ageing assets.

Efficient multi-view video coding with cuboids and base anchored models. This project aims to address current deficiencies in multi-view video coding technology to achieve the ultra-compression efficiency demanded by increasing display resolutions and synchronised viewpoints. This project aims to address current deficiencies in multi-view video coding technology to achieve the ultra-compression efficiency demanded by increasing display resolutions and synchronised viewpoints. The project expects to generate new knowledge, by moving from the current pixel-centric approach to methods that concentrate information common to many view-frames. The project is expected to improve compression of audio-visual services that are of great interest to international standards bodies and industry, while facilitating free interaction and augmented reality. This project will provide significant benefits to broadcast, entertainment, surveillance and health industries and position Australia as a world leader in this field.

    Summary
Frontiers of Australian science popularisation. This project details Australia's role in science popularisation in the 1960s and 1970s, when the boundary between science fiction and science fact was often blurred. The project will explore how popular science of that era framed today's crucial issues of climate change, overpopulation and space exploration.
