    Quantifying The Effectiveness Of Pertussis Vaccine In Older Adults

    Summary
    Pertussis is the most poorly controlled vaccine preventable disease in Australia. Childhood pertussis is a well-known public health problem but adult pertussis is also common and has a significant burden on the health system, especially in adults over 65 years. Pertussis vaccines for adults are currently not funded by our national immunisation program. This project will provide vital data to inform whether pertussis vaccination is cost-effective in older Australian adults.

    Allergic diseases are one of the most important causes of chronic morbidity among children in Australia. This is a retrospective case-controlled trial, utilising data from the Australian immunisation register and cases of confirmed food allergy, to examine the role of vaccination in protection against food allergy. If a relationship between the type of vaccination and protection against allergy is found, this would have implications for allergy prevention and immunisation policy.

    The occurrence of thyroid cancer has increased rapidly over the last 25 years but the cause is unknown. The increase may reflect ‘over-diagnosis’ of less harmful cancers or greater exposure to causes of this cancer. Evidence suggests that a gene mutation (BRAF) in thyroid cancers is important in understanding the drivers of the increase. This study will examine the increase in thyroid cancer by investigating causes and diagnostic pathways considering the presence or absence of BRAF mutations.

    In Australia, over 1,000 people are diagnosed with multiple myeloma annually. Our proposal aims to identify possible environmental and genetic causes of this serious disease. People diagnosed with myeloma, and their family members, will provide detailed personal and family histories. We plan to investigate the role of sun exposure, body size and obesity, dietary factors and pesticides as well as a large range of genetic variants. The 5-year study will be conducted in Victoria and NSW.

    Gene Expression Signature Technology To Repurpose Drugs For Bipolar Disorder

    In this project we will generate a Gene Expression Signature that best characterises the overall biological effects of a cocktail of drugs currently used to treat bipolar disorder. The Signature will be identified in cells and intact brains, and then validated using human gene expression profiling. The validated Signature will then be used to screen libraries and discover new drugs for treating bipolar disorder.

    Occupational And Environmental Exposures Associated With Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis In Australia

    Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive scarring lung disease of unknown cause with little effective treatment from which most patients die within 2-3 years. Although relatively rare, the public health impact is similar to many cancers. We will undertake a nationwide case-control study to identify jobs and exposures associated with the development of IPF. The results will influence policy to control exposures and over time reduce the occurrence of this devastating lung disease.

    Annually more than 900 Australians are diagnosed with follicular lymphoma. The proposed research aims identify the environmental and genetic causes of this serious blood cancer. Exposure to specific chemicals, types of work, sun exposure, and body size are some of the factors the study will examine. The 5-year study will be conducted in NSW, ACT and Victoria.

    Pancreatic carcinoma is the fourth most common cause of cancer death in developed countries, and is approximately sixty percent more common in men than in women. In Australia approximately 1800 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year and there are a similar number of deaths. The five-year survival is less than five percent, and the majority of patients die within the first year. Surgery is frequently not possible due to the advanced stage of disease at diagnosis, and chemotherapy i .... In Australia approximately 1800 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year and there are a similar number of deaths. The five-year survival is less than five percent, and the majority of patients die within the first year. Surgery is frequently not possible due to the advanced stage of disease at diagnosis, and chemotherapy is largely ineffective. A better understanding of the causes of pancreatic cancer is essential in order to develop strategies to prevent this lethal cancer. Currently the causes of pancreatic cancer are poorly understood. Family history and smoking probably account for approximately 30% of cases, but for the remainder the cause is unknown. This study will assess a new hypothesis, namely that too much acid in the stomach possibly caused by infection with a bacterial organism, could increase the risk of pancreatic cancer. We will include people who are diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas (cases), and match these to people selected from the electoral roll who have not ever been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (controls). Participants will be asked a series of detailed questions about their diet, smoking, occupation and medical history. We will collect blood to look for antibodies to the bacteria and to examine specific genes, and we will compare all these factors in cases and controls. This is one of the first large studies of pancreatic cancer in Australia and we will take an integrated approach to examining interactions between genetics and exposure to environmental factors.

    This study is part of a large international collaboration to study whether policies directed at whole communities work as planned. We survey around 2000 smokers from each of 4 countries every year. We compare reactions of smokers in a country with a policy to those in a country without such a policy or with a different policy. We do this by following through the likely chain of effects to smoking cessation. In this way we can provide advice to governments not only on whether their policies work .... This study is part of a large international collaboration to study whether policies directed at whole communities work as planned. We survey around 2000 smokers from each of 4 countries every year.
