Next Generation Cybernetics: Long Term Carbon Fibre Dual Stimulation / Recording Electrode Arrays For Closed Loop Neural Implants

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $679,670.00
    Summary
Electrodes implanted in the brain have enormous potential for treating a range of conditions from epilepsy to control of prosthetics for patients with limb loss. Currently, the electrodes used in such system fail rapidly because they are rejected by the body. We aim to use diamond with ultra-fine carbon fibre electrodes to make arrays that are invisible to the human immune system. Such arrays will function for the lifetime of the patient without needing replacement.

Structural Studies On Cell Signalling Via The LIF Receptor And Gp130

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $453,943.00
    Summary
The cytokines play important roles in the immune system during blood cell development and inflammation, and in nerve growth, bone remodeling, reproduction and heart development. Cell responses are initiated by a cytokine bringing together on the cell surface a receptor complex made up of multiple molecules. This project will investigate the atomic structure of the cell surface macromolecular complex, and hence the underlying mechanism by which cytokine signals are initiated.

Mechanisms Underlying Generation Of Febrile Seizures In Mouse Models Of Human Familial Epilepsy

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $304,559.00
    Summary
Febrile Seizures (FS) affect 3% of children aged 0.5 - 6 yrs and have been proposed as an indicator of severe forms of adult generalized epilepsy. Mechanisms underlying FS generation are unknown although studies of Australian families suffering from epilepsy have linked 2 genes to FS. We have generated mice expressing these 2 genes. Aims and Outcomes: to investigate events triggering FS which will provide important insights into why FS occurs in children. (NB: CIA 2 yr career interruption)
