Numerical prediction of bushfire behaviour and bushfire weather. Bushfires are a threat to Australia’s population and infrastructure, but there are many aspects of fire behaviour that are poorly understood. This project will examine how bushfires interact with the atmosphere and how these interactions influence fire spread. This research will underpin the development of new systems for fire weather prediction.
Forecasting drought impacts months ahead using satellite data. Skillful seasonal water and crop forecasts could do much to help cope with drought and water-related food crises. Recent advances in hydrological modelling and satellite remote sensing of surface soil moisture, landscape water storage and vegetation biomass have created a great opportunity to produce such forecasts over large areas. Organocatalysis has transformed the way chemical synthesis is performed. However, in the early years the focus of this discipline has primarily been enolate type chemistry, and more challenging reactions, such as those involving carbenoid intermediates, have not been contemplated.
