This project aims to strengthen Australian research activities in the development of advanced multifunctional materials through the purchase of thermal and ultraviolet (UV) nano-imprint lithography modules to expand the nanofabrication capacity of roll-to-roll printer line. The various processes used to make nano-sized devices and components fall into two major categories, coating and patterning. Integrating the thermal and UV nanoimprint lithography modules into the roll-to-roll printer line will provide a unique and simple materials fabrication platform. It will combine coating and nanolithography processes in a low cost, high-throughput and high-resolution format for advanced nanofabrication of microelectronic, telecommunication, biomedical and energy devices.Read moreRead less

This project aims to realise rapid fabrication of controllable nano-devices over large areas with high throughput and low cost. The lack of large-size (greater than four inch) mask and ultra-low dose resist are the fundamental challenges for high-throughput radioisotope-powered parallel electron nano-lithography (RIPEL) systems. This project aims to realise a large-size RIPEL mask by using the ultra-light supporting material aerographite that has a state-of-the-art ratio value of Young's modulus to cubic density. It will also develop a new inorganic nanoparticle resist with ultra-low dose. These building blocks will enhance RIPEL's throughput by four orders of magnitude. The project will contribute to making processors or solid state storage cheaper and more efficient.Read moreRead less

This proposal concerns the development of advanced technologies informed by knowledge management systems to ensure the continued provision of high-quality drinking water to Australian. This is particularly important as we see the impacts from climate change and extreme weather variability with catastrophic consequences such as recently seen in Victoria and in Queensland on water catchments and water quality and supply. The challenges of adequate water resourcing, both in quantity and quality, for Australians who wish to lead healthy and productive lives are serious and require collaboration between industry, government and research providers such as is proposed here. This project aims to support the practical applications of layered nanostructure-based devices and systems. The development of layered chalcogenide nanostructures is a global research focus due to their potential applications in the energy sector. However, their structure–property link is unclear due to the lack of direct correlation between their structure and properties. This project aims to establish the intrinsic structure–property link by closely correlating the structure (and structural variations) and properties (and varied properties) simultaneously determined from individual nanostructures inside a transmission electron microscope. Expected project outcomes may advance the knowledge base, and provide guidelines for the development of nanostructure-based devices for their high-performance applications, especially in the energy sector.Read moreRead less

This project aims to investigate radical new approaches to reduce chemical and energy requirements for transformation of indigenous natural graphite to a high-value material graphene. The graphite which will be used is the by-product of the Uley mines of South Australia. Graphene is an atomically thin arrangement of carbon atoms with combinations of remarkable chemical inertness, strength, and massive surface area. Utilising fluid phase dispersed graphene, this project aims to develop scalable and industrially-adaptable methods to manufacture thin yet mechanically robust, inert, fouling-resistant, highly-permeable graphene-based asymmetric membranes. These advanced membranes are expected to find wide application in reducing discharge of mining effluents and recovery of precious metals.Read moreRead less
Three dimensional nano-lithography: combined electron and ion beam fabrication. By adding one more dimension to a planar (hence two dimensional - 2D) lithography, it will become possible to structure and texture materials in three dimensions (3D) by combining electron beam lithography (2D) and ion beam milling (3D) with the highest precision of several nanometres. This will open new applications in photonics and sensing.
