Summary
Heart failure (HF) is a major cause of death in Australia. A/Prof Rebecca Ritchie heads Heart Failure Pharmacology at Baker IDI. Her research focuses on new drug strategies to maintain heart function in response to diabetes & heart attack, common precursors of HF. Many of the treatments discovered from this work are naturally-occurring antioxidants; enhancing their activity will ultimately reduce progression to HF & death in the >3 million Australians affected by these disorders.

My research focuses on preventing and treating atherosclerotic disease and its complications such as heart attack and stroke. This will be achieved by developing new imaging technologies, with the aim to detect unstable atherosclerotic plaques, as well as innovative new drugs preventing inflammation and thrombosis as the major contributors of heart attack and stroke.

Summary
Injuries such as concussion and muscle/joint sprains/strains are a recognised sports medicine issue globally. They are a major barrier towards sustained physical activity participation and a public health concern. Much information about their causes and prevention is yet to be fully disseminated to the community and adopted as standard safety practice. This fellowship will provide a strong evidence-base for sports injury prevention and monitoring, as well as sports safety promotion strategies.
Through the improved understanding of the determinants of road injury, the identification of effective and efficient preventive strategies and how best to translate the research findings, this Fellowship will facilitate reductions in the burden of road injury in Australia.

Approximately 10% of babies are born prematurely and many suffer long-term health problems. Our aim is to understand how premature birth affects the development of the cardiovascular, respiratory and central nervous systems. This understanding will help to improve the long-term health outcomes for premature infants. Summary
My research program will deliver research outcomes that will improve the quality of life for older Australians, increase the life-span spent in productivity (as opposed to dependency) and reduce health-care costs. I will conduct interventions to improve the skill of older drivers so they can remain independent, and interventions to reduce cognitive decline and risk of dementia. My work will provide information and interventions for middle-aged and older adults, enabling them to age well.
Sleep loss through sleep deprivation and sleep disorders is a common problem causing impaired brain and heart function as well as increasing human errors in the workplace. The fellowship will involve new research focusing on how better treatment of sleep problems can reduce blood pressure, vascular disease and road crashes. Cutting edge research facilities will help new studies into how jet lag and shiftwork impair health and how to counter this risk.
