We are studying a muscle protein called a-actinin-3. This protein is absent in approximately one billion people worldwide. A-actinin-3 is associated with athletic performance. Our goal is to explore how the absence of a-actinin-3 influences human skeletal muscle function and metabolism. We will be studying a-actinin-3 deficiency using a mouse model.

Structural And Functional Characterisation Of The Oncogene P-Rex1

Summary
The spread of cancer to other parts of the body (metastasis) is a major cause of mortality. The characterisation of proteins that regulate metastasis is therefore a priority. P-Rex1 plays a crucial role in promoting metastasis in breast and other cancers. We will determine the structural basis of P-Rex1 activity, and investigate how its dysregulation promotes aberrant cell growth. This study will provide the knowledge to build future drug development programs targeting P-Rex1 in cancer.
Whether we are born as a male or a female affects our sense of social place, behaviour, gender identity, reproductive options, and disease susceptibility. I am a molecular geneticist investigating the biology of gender. I study the mechanisms underpinning sexual development, with an emphasis on identifying the genetic causes of ‘intersex’ and transsex disorders. I am also studying how SRY, a male gene, controls voluntary movement, and its possible link to Parkinson’s disease.
