These states host a variety of fascinating novel phenomena, which can be exploited for ultra-sensitive interferometry and topological quantum computing. The project will develop a complete description of these phases and design new quantum devices that utilise their properties. The fundamental significance of the project is in bringing together ideas from the diverse fields of atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter, quantum information, and topology and its direct relevance to the development of a new generation of quantum devices.Read moreRead less
Dietary patterns across the life-course: implications for the prevention of obesity, cardiometabolic disease and public health. This research will focus on dietary patterns in population health across the life-course. We know little about how dietary patterns and their determinants vary across life and the impact of life-stage transitions on diet and health. This research will provide insights into dietary patterns of infants, children, young adults and older adults.
Identifying novel salinity tolerance mechanisms by spatial and temporal analysis of lipids in barley. Agrifood production faces the dual challenges of an increasing world population and the threats of abiotic stresses arising from climate change and the erosion of arable land. Cereals, the major food crops, are poorly adapted to tolerate most abiotic stresses, including salinity. This project applies new technologies investigating spatial and temporal biochemical mechanisms a model cereal, Hordeum vulgare (barley), utilises to adapt and tolerate salinity. The aims are to investigate the role of specifically plasma membrane lipids modulating either signalling pathways or membrane fluidity that impacts on adaptation during salinity. The results will provide new leads for the development of cereal germplasm with increased salt tolerance.Read moreRead less

Mental disorders such as depression are a major cause of disability. Improving mental health can increase productivity and workforce participation. However, the psychosocial quality of work is a factor that overlays the relationship between work and health. Poor quality work (for example, unreasonable time pressure, insecurity) increases the risk of poor mental health, absenteeism, and exit from the workforce. This project will analyse data following people over time to investigate the long-term health and employment consequences of poor psychosocial job quality, and consider the special case of mature age workers. It will identify those individuals at greatest risk, and factors that can buffer against the adverse effects of poor quality work.Read moreRead less
Unaffordable housing: impacts on socio-economic conditions and wellbeing . The project plans to explore how the current housing affordability crisis is shaping population wellbeing and socioeconomic outcomes. The project plans to explore how the current housing affordability crisis is shaping population wellbeing and socioeconomic outcomes. Housing affordability is a key driver of health-related inequalities – the dramatic rise in the cost of housing in the past decade is forcing people to make hard decisions about location and quality of housing. This project aims to provide a new framework for analysing housing affordability's long-term impact on wellbeing and socioeconomic outcomes by merging concepts from life course epidemiology on the importance of the timing, sequence and accumulation of exposure, to transition points at critical life stages from the social sciences. It plans to develop information to contribute to public discourse and improve policy in the area.Read moreRead less

Urban spaces and active ageing: understanding person-environment interactions to inform activity-friendly community design. The proportion of older adults in urban areas is rapidly growing, leading to increases in health-care costs that are associated with chronic diseases. This can be offset by creating urban environments that support an active lifestyle across mid-to-late adulthood. How urban community designs shape the physical activity of this understudied age group is unclear. Using a suite of national and international epidemiological studies, This project aims to identify the optimal mix and spatial distribution of destinations (facilities and places to visit) for active ageing, while taking into account factors that define one’s ability and willingness to visit these destinations. This will inform public policy and activity-friendly community design.Read moreRead less
Virtual colliders: high-accuracy models for high energy physics. This project will create an advanced and general model of high-energy processes, focusing on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. New analytical and numerical solutions will be developed and combined to reach unprecedented accuracy and detail. This will clarify important phenomenological questions in the Standard Model and will enable more precise searches for deviations from it (new physics). A publicly available numerical code will be produced, with a large number of applications. These include, for instance, precision extraction of fundamental parameters and improved absolute calibrations of experimental measurements, explicit theoretical modelling of new physics phenomena, and optimisation of detector design and analysis strategies.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop technologies and techniques to detect dark matter. Particle physics research seeks to understand the universe at its most fundamental level. The Higgs boson discovery confirmed the Standard Model of particle physics, but many fundamental questions about the microscopic nature of the universe remain. The universe predominantly consists of dark matter, which the particles within the Standard Model do not explain. The Large Hadron Collider and Australia’s SABRE provide a huge opportunity to discover physics processes by enabling searches for new particles at the high-energy frontier and the direct detection of dark matter.Read moreRead less
Understanding physics through flexible calculations. This project aims to explore and interpret physics at the high energy frontier with calculations and computational techniques. It will develop and apply techniques and software to arbitrary physics models and make predictions in models.
