ARC Research Hub for Basin GEodyNamics and Evolution of SedImentary Systems (GENESIS). This Research Hub aims to undertake simultaneous modelling of deep Earth and surface processes, spanning basin scales to individual sediment grains. The Hub will develop and apply cutting-edge basin simulation approaches to transform the seeding and testing of basin exploration models, extending their viability to complex, inaccessible remote and deep exploration targets. The Hub will fuse multidimensional data into five dimensional basin models (space and time, with uncertainty estimates) by coupling the evolution of mantle flow, crustal deformation, erosion and sedimentary processes, achieving a quantum leap in basin modelling and petroleum systems analysis.Read moreRead less
Mapping ear morphology to individualised three dimensional audio. The project aims to develop a practical method to derive a listener's individualised Head Related Transfer Functions from two dimensional images of the head and ears. These are essential for generating high-fidelity three dimensional audio. The project will perceptually evaluate and test the proposed system when applied to teleconferencing, surveillance, and navigational guidance.
Integrating Mobility on Demand in urban transport infrastructures. Australia’s major cities are substantially challenged for public transport services due to the dispersed and low population densities, and thus, roads are at or beyond their capacity. Smarter demand-responsive public transport services are therefore needed. This project studies the viability of such a service under a variety of scenarios.
Advanced electrochemical capacitors. This project aims to design electrochemical capacitors that can provide self-sustaining power for equipment using renewable energy sources, such as sunlight. Electrical power systems are needed to supply both the peak power and the energy demand that users, particularly those without grid electricity, and their equipment need. Electrical power systems are needed to supply both the peak power and the energy demand that users, particularly those without grid electricity, and their equipment need. This project will match the capacitator electrochemistry to the power attributes of the load and charging source, making them more efficiently charged and able to supply both peak power and energy demand for improved off-grid power supplies and integration of renewable energy into electricity grids.Read moreRead less
Individualisation for 3D Audio. The project aim is to allow the general listener to enjoy high-fidelity 3-D sound over headphones. Such 3-D audio is of paramount importance when inter-personal communication requires situational awareness, (eg search and rescue, fire-fighting, and air traffic control). To achieve this, the project aims to address one of the toughest problems in audio signal processing: deriving high-fidelity 3-D audio headphone filters from photos and/or 3D scans of ears. The project plans to address fundamental research questions in statistical shape and data analysis and to perceptually evaluate the 3-D audio methods developed.Read moreRead less
Dynamics and control of complex social networks. This project aims to understand the extent to which a given complex social network can be controlled and how different control mechanisms influence network structure and dynamics. This project aims to understand the extent to which a given complex social network can be controlled and how different control mechanisms influence network structure and dynamics. There is a great interest in controlling complex networks including social networks as it might contribute to solving important societal challenges. Using gender imbalance, minority marginalisation, and criminal behaviour as case studies, this project will investigate the direction of networks controllability and mechanisms that would enable alteration of the network in a desired way. This project will have an impact on our current understanding of network's behaviour, and will contribute to solving a range of societal challenges.Read moreRead less
Understanding the deep driving forces of Earth’s large-scale topography through time. We propose to model the convection of Earth’s mantle linked to tectonic plate motions to unravel their combined influence on the evolution of topography over 550 million years. The project will lead to an understanding of the driving forces of large-scale topography in continental interiors and along their margins through geological time.
Coupling Learning in Big Data. Big data features complex coupling relationships within and between diverse entities in various forms and layers. This fundamentally challenges existing learning theories, which usually assume that data is independent and identically distributed (IID). This indicates that such IID tools may either be inapplicable for big data or capture an incomplete or even biased picture of the ground truth in big data. Hence, this project aims to invent breakthrough theories and ....Coupling Learning in Big Data. Hence, this project aims to invent breakthrough theories and effective tools for systematically modelling and learning sophisticated couplings embedded in big data applications. The outcomes are expected to enhance Australia's leading role in data science research and lift data intelligence-driven productivity and economic growth in a changing world.Read moreRead less

The project aims to develop novel computational epidemiological models to contribute to guidelines for optimal prophylaxis, vaccination and case management. Emerging threats posed by infectious diseases and bioterrorism could have dramatic effects on the Australian population, productivity and economy. The project aims to improve the accuracy and scope of modern computational epidemiological models by integrating large-scale Census datasets and explicitly simulating the entire population down to the level of single individuals, coupled with complex network-based and information flow analysis. The intended outcomes include a more precise and efficient forecasting of critical epidemic dynamics, and increased effectiveness of prevention, mitigation and management of socio-economic, socio-ecological and national security crises.Read moreRead less

The 64- and 128-slice positron emission tomography – computed tomography (PET-CT) devices at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital were the first in the country. These scanners, with the medical cyclotron and radiochemistry facilities, represent an investment of over A$13 million. This project will address pressing issues in optimising the utilisation of the information and systems to provide better service to patients and referring clinicians. This research will add considerable value to Australia's medical imaging infrastructure and healthcare delivery; and advance scientific research in better understanding of system biology, physiology and pathology. The research outcomes will strengthen Australia’s leading position in biomedical information technology research and Australian medical imaging expertise.Read moreRead less
