Test bed for wide-area software defined networking research: This project aims to develop a wide-area test bed, spanning ten organisations, for conducting research and experimentation in the emerging disruptive technology of Software Defined Networking (SDN). SDN is likely to bring long-term transformation to the networking industry, much like cloud computing did, by enabling dynamic virtualised elastic network services under software control. The test bed will empower Australian researchers in network technologies and dependent applications (for example, multimedia and security) to collaboratively develop and demonstrate novel ideas at scale. This is expected to benefit Australia by giving our researchers international recognition in this nascent area, and developing a national talent pool for local industry.Read moreRead less
Decimetre-level indoor positioning on Wi-Fi. This project aims to exploit both spatial and frequency diversities based on the multiple-input, multiple-out and frequency hopping techniques to achieve the goal of decimetre-level position accuracy by significantly increasing Wi-Fi bandwidth. Wi-Fi positioning is utilised in locations where GPS is blocked, typically this is within a structure. The project will design a set of mechanisms to facilitate Wi-Fi positioning, discover key principles to gui ....Decimetre-level indoor positioning on Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi positioning is utilised in locations where GPS is blocked, typically this is within a structure. The project will design a set of mechanisms to facilitate Wi-Fi positioning, discover key principles to guide practical design, and develop advanced algorithms to push the performance limit to decimetre-level accuracy. The project will develop key fundamental technologies which are expected to promote innovative, practical, and cost-effective applications to local industry and service sectors and contribute to Australia's long-term economic growth.Read moreRead less
Blockchain-Enabled Federated Learning for Secure and Decentralised Learning. This project aims to develop novel blockchain-enabled federated learning techniques for secure and decentralised learning. It addresses an important and urgent machine learning problem, that is, the data useful for training machine learning models are often held by different owners who are not willing to share their data due to privacy concerns, resulting in isolated data islands. The project will result in a set of inn ....Blockchain-Enabled Federated Learning for Secure and Decentralised Learning. The project will result in a set of innovative algorithms that provide solutions to the key challenges in blockchain-enabled federated learning. The expected outcomes of the project will dramatically advance the frontier of machine learning and blockchain research, and have massive social and economic benefits for Australia and international communities.Read moreRead less
Cost-effective App Service Management in Edge Computing Environment. This project aims to deliver a framework and a suite of approaches for cost-effective app service management in the edge computing (EC) environment facilitated by the 5G mobile network. Edge computing offers great promises for rapidly advancing mobile and IoT apps in many active domains in Australia, e.g., self-driving cars, medical services, etc. Using a variety of optimization techniques and game theory, this project attacks ....Cost-effective App Service Management in Edge Computing Environment. Using a variety of optimization techniques and game theory, this project attacks the new challenges in the deployment, delivery and adaptation of app services in the EC environment. The outcomes of this project will significantly promote new mobile and IoT apps over Australia's 5G mobile network by allowing app vendors to manage their services cost-effectively with ease in the EC environment.Read moreRead less
Congestion control of networks: a unified stochastic framework. Systems such as the internet, wireless networks and the power grid require efficient allocation of shared resources. This research will develop ways to reduce delays in the internet and allow for growth in the power grid, without requiring additional infrastructure.

Context-awareness in Internet of Things (IoT) applications has profound impact on smartness, relevance, adaptability, dependability, performance and flexibility of such applications. This project will address the significant knowledge gap by investigating, proposing and validating a novel adaptive context caching scheme for fast near real-time access in multiple concurrent context queries coming from multiple and diverse ....Adaptive context caching for fast concurrent access in Internet of Things. Context-awareness in Internet of Things (IoT) applications has profound impact on smartness, relevance, adaptability, dependability, performance and flexibility of such applications. This project will address the significant knowledge gap by investigating, proposing and validating a novel adaptive context caching scheme for fast near real-time access in multiple concurrent context queries coming from multiple and diverse IoT applications. The outcome will be a critical component of the IoT context management platform called Context-as-a-Service which is currently under development. The expected benefits will be far ranging and applicable to many domains including intelligent transportation, industrial internet and smart cities..Read moreRead less
An integrative and distributed data management and workflow framework for e-research in biomedical imaging. This project will develop new tools for neuroimaging research: (i) efficient distributed infrastructure and workflow capabilities and (ii) semantic tools using existing ontological frameworks and specific neuroimaging ontologies.
These new capabilities will significantly enhance the productivity of neuroimaging research.
Responsive automated negotiation in open distributed environments. The outcomes of this project will be of central importance to a wide range of application areas such as service economy, smart energy grids and smart transportation. The work proposed here will enable the information technology industry to utilise distributed systems and agent technologies in developing the software-driven knowledge economy of the twenty-first-century.
